Roswell “Ros” Murphy a native of Jesup, Georgia died in the Inpatient Unit of Hospice of South Georgia on Friday, May 10, 2024 after a long illness and valiant health battle.

Ros attended Wayne County High, Brunswick High, and graduated with an associate degree in business from Brunswick College. Beginning at age 16, Ros began work in his father’s business, Murphy Builders’ Supply, eventually becoming CEO and owner.  He was proud that each of his five children and five of his grandchildren worked at some time at Murphy’s and that today the business is owned and operated by his son and daughter.  

An active civic-minded individual, Ros was a member of the Pine Forest Country Club Golf Association, was president of the Rotary Club, where he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow and was president of the Jesup Jaycees where he was instrumental in the remodeling of Jaycee Stadium and creation of Jaycee Landing, the building of the Jaycee Clubhouse, and the 1972 hosting of the Georgia Jaycee Convention.  Ros was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served on the Jesup Interstate Credit Union Board and the Construction Supplier’s Association Board. He was a life-long Georgia Tech fan.

Ros is predeceased by his parents Robert “Buck” Wiley Murphy and Betty Majette Murphy.

Survivors are his wife of 39 years, Melba Bennett Murphy, daughter Jennifer Murphy Reeder (Steven), sons Kevin Murphy (Sarah), Matt Keith (Kelly), Russ Keith (Sarah) and Justin Keith (Emma), grandchildren, Luke and Abbi McBee, Noah Murphy, Emma Murphy, Hampton Keith, Ella Keith, Olive Keith, Charly Keith, and great-grandchildren McKenna McBee and John Luke McBee; siblings, Susan (Don) Carson, Mike (Cheryl) Murphy, Ellen (Larry) Smith and Katie (Wally) Orrel; two nieces, Maggie Sorel and Katie Murphy; a grand-niece, Reese; brother-in-law, Fred (Ansley) Bennett; four-legged companions Sadie and Hank, and caregiver Micki Brooker.

A celebration of his life will be 5 PM Monday, May 13, 2024 at Rinehart Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers will be the past and present employees of Murphy’s Builders Supply, the Supper Club, staff of Hospice of South Georgia, Randy Parks, Dr. Robert Pumpelly, Dan Clary, Herman Gordon, David Earl, Dell and Kevin Keith, Shon Mullis and Ralph Doomes. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.
