Manchester-based music and mental health social enterprise Headstock has collaborated again with street artist Akse to unveil their lates muralin Manchester.
Headstock was previously behind the famed murals of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis in Manchester, and The Prodigy’s Keith Flint in Hackney, London.
The latest mural features Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and was unveiled on the side of Manchester’s Bread Shed, a live music venue & event space, just of Oxford Road in Manchester, over the weekend. The mural is a short walk from where Nirvana played their only two Manchester gigs, at Manchester Polytechnic Students Union in 1989 and Manchester Academy in 1991.
The completion of the mural has been timed to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK, as well as the 30th anniversary of Cobain’s death on April 5, 1994.
The mural has been created to raise awareness of mental health text support charity – Shout – and the artwork features the charity’s logo and number.
Headstok’s Ian Curtis mural was previously unveiled for a second time, following the original’s destruction to make way for an ad for Manchester rapper Aitch in 2022 ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day 2023, while Keith Flint marked World Suicide Prevention Day in 2021.
The mural has been funded via a Crowdfunder campaign – as well as a generous donation for ticketing platform, Skiddle.
