A Carmarthenshire beach has been given an award in the Wales Coast Awards 2024.

The beach in question, Cefn Sidan, was included among the prestigious Blue Flag award winners of the keep Wales Tidy campaign.

Blue Flag is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). This coveted award recognises beaches around the globe, as well as marinas and boats.

It is given out based on a multitude of criteria.

These encompass environmental education, sustainable development of tourism and environmental management systems.

They also include safety measures and access for beach users.

Cefn Sidan was conferred the honour due to its adherence to these stringent standards.

Cabinet secretary for climate change and rural affairs, Huw Irranca-Davies, praised the award winners in a statement.

Mr Irranca-Davies said: "Wales boasts some of Europe's finest beaches and water quality, and the global recognition of our coastline is a true reflection of the dedication and hard work of so many people, today we celebrate the announcement of 49 winners for the Wales Coast Awards 2024.

"As we celebrate in this achievement, let us also heed the call to protect and preserve our coastal treasures."

He further emphasised the importance of sustainable enjoyment of these places.

He said: "Let's ensure that we leave nothing but footprints, allowing these breathtaking spaces to be enjoyed for many generations to come."

Owen Derbyshire, chief executive of Keep Wales Tidy, also expressed delight at the year's winning beaches, marinas and boats.

He confirmed the extensive effort put into maintaining these areas, which have made them among the best in the world.

Mr Derbyshire said: "Achieving these prestigious awards means meeting rigorous standards put in place to ensure the safe enjoyment of visitors now and in years to come.

"This success is a testament to the hard work of all involved in maintaining and enhancing the natural beauty of our Welsh coastline."

The award's announcement shines a spotlight on Cefn Sidan and on the importance of sustainable tourism development, environmental education, and management systems.

The Blue Flag title gives deserving recognition to Welsh beaches for their stellar management practices and their provision of key information about water quality and safety.

The 24 winning Welsh beaches, including Cefn Sidan, have upheld these standards and are therefore duly appreciated.
