The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the role of head coach of the men's team, as Rahul Dravid's tenure is set to conclude after the T20 World Cup 2024. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coach Stephen Fleming and Delhi Capitals' (DC) Ricky Ponting are in contention to replace Rahul Dravid.

Rahul Dravid signed a two-year contract after the 2021 T20 World Cup. The 51-year-old was granted a six-month extension after the 2023 ODI World Cup to continue overseeing operations through the 2024 T20 World Cup. Dravid can reapply for the head coach position, but he is unlikely to do so due to personal reasons.

Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming Approached By BCCI - Report

According to a report by RevSportz, BCCI has informally approached Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming for the next Indian head coach position. However, their response hasn't been very positive. It's worth mentioning that Ponting and Fleming have extensive experience in the IPL.

Stephen Fleming is currently engaged with the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL). If he becomes India's head coach, he must end ties with CSK or any IPL franchise. The head coach's contract, according to BCCI, extends until December 31, 2027.

John Wright guided India to notable achievements, including reaching the 2003 World Cup final. Gary Kirsten helped India secure the trophy in the 2011 ODI World Cup. However, the BCCI began favouring Indian coaches after an unsuccessful stint with Duncan Fletcher.

Team India secured consecutive Test series victories in Australia during Ravi Shastri's tenure. Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma led the team to the World Test Championship final and ODI World Cup final. However, the Men in Blue failed to secure victory in the final matches.

The next head coach will receive a three-and-a-half-year contract, until the 2027 ODI World Cup. The role entails several key responsibilities, including developing a world-class Indian cricket team for sustained success across all conditions and formats.

"The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a world-class Indian cricket team that delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, inspiring current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with their approach to the game."

"The Head Coach will have overall responsibility for the performance and management of the India Men’s team in all three formats of the game."

"The Head Coach will lead a team of specialist coaches and support staff and will be responsible for defining their roles, their performance and ongoing development."

"The Head Coach will be responsible for reviewing, maintaining, and enforcing the disciplinary codes within the Indian Men’s team."

The next coach of the Indian team will face a significant challenge, handling a transition period across various formats. With several team members nearing the final stages of their careers, the task of selecting the right candidates for the team becomes crucial for ensuring long-term success.
