Palme d'Or 2024 contenders
This year, an Indian film is in the running for the prestigious Palme d'Or: Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' will compete with the likes of 'The Godfather' director Francis Ford Coppola's storied 'Megalopolis', 'Poor Things' director Yorgos Lanthimos's 'Kinds of Kindness', 'The Seeds of the Sacred Fig' by Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof who had to flee to Europe following an eight-year prison sentence in his own country and Paul Schrader's 'Oh Canada' (Schrader wrote the screenplay for some iconic Martin Scorsese films, including 'Taxi Driver' and 'Raging Bull').
The 2023 Palme d'Or went to Justine Triet’s 'Anatomy of a Fall', which went on win awards across the world, including the Golden Globes for best screenplay and best non-Engling language film, and the BAFTA and Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
The Main Competition winner will be announced on May 25, at the Cannes Closing Ceremony.
This year, Cannes is also honouring actress Meryl Streep ('Devil Wears Prada'), Japanese animation giant Studio Ghibli ('Castle in the Sky') and George Lucas (creator of the 'Star Wars' and 'Indiana Jones' films) with Honorary Palme d'Ors.
Apart from the Cannes Main Competition, films will be assessed under six segments, each with its own jury. These segments are Un Certain Regard (Shahana Goswami-starrer 'Santosh' and 'The Shameless', set in north India, are in the running for this), Cinéfondation and Short Films Competition (FTII Pune student Chidananda S Naik's 'Sunflowers Were The First To Know' is in the running for this grant), Caméra d'Or, L'Œil d'Or, Critics' Week and Queen Palm.
This year, two more prizes are up for grabs. A new 'Immersive Competition of the Festival de Cannes' prize and a people's choice award for one film under the Director's Fortnight section which includes a screening of Radhika Apte-starrer 'Sister Midnight' this year.
