Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service arrangements, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and personal preference. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Online obituaries often allow for longer tributes and stories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help people remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses for sending obituaries.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and additional features such as photos or special layouts. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I publish an obituary online for free?

In most cases, changes can be made to an online obituary with ease. For traditional newspapers, changes may be more difficult or costly once the obituary has been published.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only essential information such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service details. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or feasible.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing the death and providing basic information about the person's life. A eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered during a funeral or memorial service, typically sharing personal anecdotes and memories of the deceased.

Can I write my own obituary?
