Full subway service has resumed in both directions between Broadview and St. George stations on Monday, the transit agency says.

Line 2 subway service was shut down for much of the day after an overnight work car spilled fluid on the tracks. The conditions prompted train operators to report slippery conditions, the TTC said.

"We know this was a frustrating day for our customers and we apologize for it. We will continue our investigation into how this happened," TTC media relations said on X, formerly Twitter, shortly after 7 p.m.

Westbound service resumed first followed by eastbound service.

Earlier Monday, Adrian Grundy, senior communications advisor for the TTC, said crews had to make sure that the fluid was removed from the tracks.

"We are testing trains through the line that will continue till we are satisfied," Grundy said.

The TTC's Stuart Green told CBC Radio's Metro Morning that operators reported the fluid hampered the ability to stop trains at the next station, with some experiencing a small but not significant overshoot of their regular stopping point. TTC officials said later Monday morning that the mess was caused by spilled hydraulic fluid.

Crews at track level mopped up the fluid.

At one point, the TTC said it had deployed 100 shuttle buses. About 30 were deployed by 8:15 a.m.

Service levels on both the 504 King and 505 Dundas streetcars were increased to help commuters downtown, the transit agency said.
