Student Spotlight: Life - Change Experience in Switzerland | Dulwich College Suzhou

Student Spotlight: Life - Change Experience in Switzerland

At Term 2 commences, two of our DCSZ Year 9 --  Yu Xiang S and Xin Yu Y, proudly embarked on their 12-week Ignite journey, heading to the HIF (Hochalpines Institut Ftan) School located in the stunning Swiss Alps.  And after they returned to DCSZ, we invited them to share their experiences with us!

Ignite is a programme for the curious, passionate, and brave, a unique 12-week overseas residential experience exclusive to Year 9 Dulwich students.

The programme kicked off in 2022 and feedback from the previous participating students back from Switzerland was amazing. Let’s see the experiences of our students!

Xin Yu Y, Year 9

1. How was your experience in HIF this time in general?

First of all, I must say that the scenery there was absolutely stunning. The learning experiences at HIF proved to be both helpful and captivating. It felt like being part of a big family, and I forged numerous friendships during my time there. We learned and played together, and even now, we are still in contact even after returning to Suzhou.

2. What is the best thing that you have learned at HIF?

During my time at HIF, I have noticed significant personal growth. I have become more collaborative, independent, and self-controlled in various aspects of my life. At HIF, parents don't instruct you on every task, so you learn to take responsibility for completing chores, homework, and learning independently. This fosters better organization and self-management skills.

Also, in fact, when I initially arrived at HIF, I experienced a sense of anxiety. However, as time progressed, I formed numerous friendships, which helped me become more sociable and adaptable. Now, even when in a foreign country, I find myself being more optimistic and open to trying new things.

3. Is there any story or strong expression you would like to share with us?

I have a great passion for skiing, and I already possessed basic skiing skills before joining the Ignite program. Hence, my time at HIF allowed me to make significant improvements in my skiing abilities. One particularly fascinating aspect was cross-country skiing. The snow in Switzerland differs from that in China, as it is powdery and fresh. This unique snow quality added an extra level of challenge to the exercise. After each session, we would feel physically exhausted, but deep inside, our hearts were filled with a sense of fulfillment and enrichment.

4. Have you noticed any personal changes in yourself since participating in the Ignite program?

In all honesty, I have noticed a significant boost in my confidence and the willingness to embrace new experiences and challenges. Initially, I had some worries, but as I spent more time at HIF, I began to feel a strong attachment to the place. If you were to ask me whether I would like to stay there, my answer would undoubtedly be a resounding "yes!" I absolutely love it.

Additionally, I have discovered a shift in my preference from working alone to valuing the importance of teamwork and collaboration. At HIF, I had numerous opportunities to work in groups, which made me realize the significance of collective effort and effective teamwork. This skill has proven to be invaluable not only for my university studies but also for my future endeavors.

5. Can you provide some suggestions to our current students who may be interested in joining the Ignite program in the future?

I wholeheartedly recommend students to participate in the program. It's essential not to hesitate and step out of your comfort zone to embrace new experiences. This opportunity is truly worth seizing.

Additionally, I have a practical advice: there is no need to bring an excessive amount of instant noodles, as you will have opportunities to visit the supermarket and purchase food. However, if you do decide to bring some, I suggest considering special seasonings like Lao Gan Ma to add a unique flavor to your meals.

Yu Xiang S, Year 9

1. How was your experience in HIF this time in general?

HIF has a rich history spanning thousands of years, and the environment and boarding facilities there are truly remarkable. During our time at HIF, we were fortunate to have a two-week holiday, divided into Adventure Week and Culture Week. During Adventure Week, our teachers guided us through a range of thrilling outdoor activities, providing us with memorable experiences. In Culture Week, the teachers immersed us in the captivating culture of Switzerland, allowing us to deepen our understanding of this unique country. These two weeks were filled with exciting adventures and valuable cultural exploration.

2. What is the best thing that you have learned at HIF?

During my time at HIF, I acquired valuable skills in time management and became more organized. With limited time to complete homework and engage in various programs like the gym or other learning projects, I learned to prioritize and focus on the tasks at hand. The time constraints helped me develop attentiveness and concentration. Moreover, my skiing skills improved significantly during my time at HIF, thanks to the dedicated learning opportunities.

Furthermore, I found that the academic subjects at HIF were well aligned with the curriculum at DCSZ. The course connection was seamless, and I discovered that I had already covered certain subjects during my time at HIF. This synchronization between the two institutions enhanced my learning experience and facilitated a smooth transition between the two educational settings.

3. Is there any story or strong expression you would like to share with us?

In addition to academic subjects, the Ignite program at HIF offered various enriching learning courses. One notable example is the Passion Project, which allowed us to delve deeper into areas of personal interest and expand our knowledge. Additionally, the program provided us with opportunities to venture into nature and experience hands-on learning. For instance, we had the incredible chance to witness the construction of a dam for beavers and even try our hand at sawing wood. We then utilized the wood we sawed ourselves to build a fire and enjoy the experience of grilling sausages. Those experiences were truly exceptional and unique, ones that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

4. Have you noticed any personal changes in yourself since participating in the Ignite program?

I have noticed a significant improvement in my organizational skills and self-regulation after returning to Suzhou. I have learned how to effectively plan and structure my day, not only in terms of academic pursuits but also in managing my personal life. For instance, I make a point to tidy up my room and establish a schedule after school. Additionally, my experience at HIF helps me to have a clear vision of my future academic endeavors at the university level. The learning environment at HIF has been beneficial to my growth, not only academically but also in terms of personal development and self-improvement.

5. Can you provide some suggestions to our current students who may be interested in joining the Ignite program in the future?

If given another opportunity, I would undoubtedly choose to join the program at HIF again. Time seemed to pass by in a flash while learning there. Regarding suggestions for future participants, I would advise them to pack an appropriate amount of clothing and be prepared for limited laundry time, as not every day allows for washing clothes. It is also advisable not to bring an excessive number of snacks, as there will be opportunities to purchase them on weekends.

The most crucial suggestion is to be prepared for a cultural shock. Many aspects, such as language, eating habits, and weather, differ from China. It is essential to approach these differences with an open mind. Additionally, if possible, learning some basic German before arriving can be beneficial, as there will be opportunities to use the language. Lastly, it is worth noting that the learning experience at HIF is intense and fast-paced. Classes are not divided based on students' learning levels, which encourages us to focus and learn, ultimately unleashing our full potential.

Learning in the HIF has been a life-altering experience that has shaped student’s outlook on the world. The blend of natural beauty, holistic education, cultural immersion, self-discovery, and lifelong connections has left a long impact on students’ personal and intellectual growth.

Thanks to the insightful sharing from Yu Xiang and Xin Yu. They are both amazing and brilliant! The next term of the Ignite program has commenced, and we extend our warmest wishes to all the students!
