As a newer fan can someone explain? Was there drama in how she left the team?

She didn’t want to be traded, the controversy is because ACFC had a no in season trade policy in their first season which they walked back on after some bad results where they couldn’t upgrade the roster. It’s a weird situation, you either trade players mid season and deal with the fall back of it, or you say you won’t trade players mid season then deal with the fallback of it when all the other teams are doing trades to improve. She was traded for basically nothing despite Houston being desperate for a CB so our GM proved she is once again not good at negotiating. The act of trading her though, not an issue we had more starting quality CB’s than most teams in the league and could afford to lose one. But the way she was traded was the problem.

Thanks! Very helpful

Lloyd-Hughes has more from Neilsen in a mini-thread: “Holy crap…did that just happen?…best fans, best stadium in the league. They mean so much to me.”

Here's the *savage* r/nwsl thread responding to the news that ACFC had sent Neilsen to Houston for $100K.

(So far,) ACFC basically received $100K to directly lose two points and to hope/pray/dream that a 35yo player who hasn't played in 23 months and after four surgeries will return and turn the entire everything around. (I hope she returns as the same player before those two years and four surgeries, ofc.) Sometimes it feels like ACFC is a comically misdirected marketing-and-media scheme, not a soccer club.

What you shouldn’t do is blame Press for a CB being traded. CB isn’t ACFC’s problem, it’s attack (and goalkeeping). We had 3 starting quality CB’s and Houston wanted one, trades are common in this league. How they went about it could’ve been a lot better but the act of trading a replaceable CB wasn’t at all a bad thing and I say that as someone who thinks Hucles should be fired. Look at Nielsen’s press conference she also mentioned being a free agent soon, it’s not uncommon even in European football to get something out of a player before they become a free agent. We don’t need Paige, what we do need is a better attack. No one’s thinking Press will come back and turn around the entire attack, no one person will, but she will help it overall like any returning player will. It’s also delusional to think ACFC or literally any other football club including your own weren’t going to make room for the face of the franchise to return from an injury. As for Henry, the athletic made it sound like she wanted out and has already contacted Utah 1.0 about a move before they folded.

Even in this game the issue isn’t that they gave up 1 goal but that they didn’t score any. But also it’s not like they are creating a bunch and not putting them away so i also don’t think press will be super helpful. She can only improve the team but they need a creative player in the midfield and just like a better plan of attack and to stop trying to play out the back which clearly they cannot do and are not getting better at.

Agreed playing out the back especially with Didi as the keeper is killing us. CB is the least of our concerns which is why we could give Nielsen up, Reid is similar quality and not a free agent next season. I’ve said many times we should use our final roster spot on a versatile 10 that can play across the front 3 when needed so I hope we look into that although I’m not sure if there’s anyone out there. Even before Press got injured that was our problem, her goals came from individual brilliance and a defender booting it up bypassing the midfield because the midfield was non-existent. A higher quality 10 that can create chances for Press, AT, Emslie, etc. would be ideal. I hope Le Bihan with more minutes and time to adjust could also potentially help this issue.

Also you should be starting bright i don’t understand why she is being benched. Even if becki feels leroux is more likely to score i think she could be better utilized as an impact sub after the daycare portion of the team runs a lot and makes the other team tired.

Agreed. I am not (and so far as I know, no one is) blaming Press.
