Jack Blocker, Abi Carter, and Will Moseley started the night by honoring mentor Jon Bon Jovi. They took the stage to sing “Livin’ on a Prayer,” followed by “Legendary,” with the artist himself joining the trio.

The three finalists also sang Bon Jovi Songs, with Moseley taking “It’s My Life,” Blocker singing “I’ll Be There for You,” and Carter performing “Bed of Roses.”

In the second round of singing, before the third place winner would be announced, Mosely sang “My Town,” Blocker performed “All My Ex’s Live in Texas,” and Carter interpreted “Somewhere.”

Blocker was eliminated from American Idol, leaving Moseley and Carter as the Top 2 finalists of Season 22.

After three hours and voting closed for a second time, viewers voted for Carter to win American Idol Season 22, with Moseley taking second place.

Following her win, Carter reprised her rendition of Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?”

Fantasia Barrino marked the 20th anniversary of winning Season 3 of American Idol and delivered an inspirational message to the finalists.

Other guest appearances included Jason Mraz, Seal, James Bay, Cody Johnson, Bishop Briggs, Nicki Frediani, Hootie and the Blowfish, New Kids on the Block, CeCe Winans, and Wynonna.

Season 22 also marked Katy Perry’s exit as judge after seven seasons. Throughout the night, the mere mention of it being Perry’s last show made the singer emotional and teary-eyed.

During the three-hour finale, Perry took the stage with third-place finalist Blocker, and they performed “What Makes a Woman.”

To honor Perry on her last day, the ladies of the Top 12 performed a medley of her hits, including “Teenage Dream,” “Dark Horse,” and “California Gurls.”

Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie joined American Idol in 2018 when ABC revived the singing competition after fifteen seasons on Fox. Since Season 16, the judge’s panel has remained unchanged until Perry’s departure tonight. ABC has not announced who will take Perry’s spot when the show returns for Season 23.
