I can't believe this actually happened and this is a real head line lol

Born in Wisconsin, Gottlieb has been a college basketball sport analyst for ESPN and CBSSN for some time along with having a sports talk radio program. He played college hoops at Oklahoma State. Despite having no previous coaching experience he now become the 10th ever Green Bay men's basketball head coach.

He's gotten encouraging words from head coaches Fran McCaffrey, Shaka Smart, Tom Izzo along with analysts and commentators Scott Van Pelt and Brian Anderson.

Per Wikipedia

Along with then-University of Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl, Gottlieb helped coach the United States team at the 2009 Maccabiah Games. He coached Team USA in basketball at the 2017 Maccabiah Games, winning a gold medal as the USA defeated France in the final in Jerusalem.

Does this count as coaching experience or nah? Genuine question I really don't know. It's nothing related to being a college assistant or head coach but I suppose it's something?

u/crastle avatar

I'd say so. While the Maccabiah Games are mostly just a fun event where you get to meet people from all over the world that you know you have something in common with, it's still pretty competitive at the top levels. It's not quite Olympic level talent or competitiveness, but teams certainly want to win for their countries.

Don’t forget about the credit card “incident” that caused him to transfer:

u/newrimmmer93 avatar

I just read today about Roy Williams talking shit about him at a press conference haha. Was fucking hilarious

u/TrustInRoy avatar

Definitely a great moment in Roy Williams' press conference history.

Gottlieb is annoying but what’s even more annoying is that redditors constantly bring up this theft under $1,000 that happened 28 years ago as some type of “own.”

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a minor crime dwelled on for that long.

u/EpistasisBassist avatar

In the big12 we forgot about that long ago. Shorts on backwards however...

u/ahhhbiscuits avatar

Eddie Sutton got fired by UK for cheating on his wife lol

Wearing your shorts the wrong way though? Just GTFO right now, we've fought battles over less

+1,000,000.

It's like people can't simultaneously:

(1) think Gottlieb is a bad sports commentator, and

(2) forgive Gottlieb for a relatively small-time incident that happened TWENTY-EIGHT years ago, an incident Gottlieb was punished for and has apologized for.

u/palerthanrice avatar

I recently found out that he even re-paid all these guys, so while it was definitely fucked up, nobody got hurt

But it’s funny

Yeah if this was a more well liked commentator no one would give a shit

u/annarboryinzer avatar

What’s a little credit card theft amongst friends? I often steal money from my friends and coworkers via their credit cards. What’s the big deal?

u/emunchkinman avatar

Agreed. He wrote a good article about it a few years ago. Gottlieb sucks, mind you, and this is an absurd hire, BUT the credit card thing is old and played out.

"Encouraging words from Fran McCaffrey."

That's it, it's over. Fran knows talent when he sees it.

Hopefully, Doug said "thanks, but no thanks".🤣

If this means we don't have to listen to him on TV anymore, I am all for it

According to Norlander, he is keeping his radio show...

u/memtiger avatar

It's great because now he can suck at 2 jobs.

u/SLAYER_IN_ME avatar

Boooo. I got my hopes up.

Unless goes full Deion and gets lots of TV time

u/richag83 avatar

I can’t imagine a world where Doug Gottlieb at Green Bay has the pull that Deion even had at Jackson State.

Watch them go 30-0

u/DaMantis avatar

After passing on him twice, our fanbase would be in shambles

Prime Time is a hall of fame player on top of being an excellent broadcaster. Gottlieb is just a hack

Prime Time

As a player, Deion was almost as good as Bo.

As a broadcaster... well, he never did know how to shut his dumbass mouth. Deion and Gottlieb aren't so different after all

the chants that followed were hilarious.

Was there. Chanted “shorts-on-backwards” clap-clap clap-clap-clap before the change and every time he touched the ball. Didn’t affect his shooting because he was already notoriously terrible.

Came here to say this. He is a moron.

People really shouldn’t be worried about a first time head coach, or lack of any sort of coaching experience for that matter. Surely it can’t go wrong

u/Mtndrums avatar

What's the worst that could happen?

u/rathernot83 avatar
Edited
  • Revives the program.

  • Does excellent.

  • Signs a ten year contract extension worth $20 million (forgot this)

  • Says he doesn't like recruiting.

  • Leaves for the NBA 22 months after signing the extension.

  • Has no control of the team.

  • Does shitty.

  • Gets fired.

  • Get hired by not exactly a rival, but a hated team of his first ever coaching job.

  • Starts to revive and have some success with the new college team.

  • Is still beloved by fan base of the 1st team. Fan base still absolutely hates the new college team of the coach.

Something like that.

Or it will be just a fun experiment. With a lot of failure.

u/Laschoni avatar

Kenny Payne couldn't even manage step 1

Fred Hoiberg says, hello!

Hoiberg had absolutely 0 coaching experience before Iowa State.

It appears Doug helped coach the United States team at the 2009 Maccabiah Games.

I’m sorry, why is everyone criticizing this? Green Bay is a nobody team and has only made the tournament once since 1995. Just cause Gottlieb js an annoying commentator doesn’t mean this is a bad hire. Green Bay has had and will have more publicity because of this hire, and that’s a win honestly.

u/LouBrown avatar

Just cause Gottlieb js an annoying commentator doesn’t mean this is a bad hire.

I agree with that.

The part that makes this a bad hire in my opinion is that Gottlieb hasn't played or coached a game of basketball in the past two decades outside of *checks notes* the 2009 and 2017 Maccabiah Games.

u/die_maus_im_haus avatar

He was also a consultant for Boynton this last year...for whatever that's worth

u/patsfan2004 avatar

That’s fair, I guess the counter could be who could Green Bay actually hire? Some rando assistant coach of a D2 program? Gottlieb is probably better honestly. Atleast he has a higher ceiling imo.

u/cowhisperer avatar

Football reference but Lance Leipold and Kansas fans would wildly disagree with the D2 coach slander.

D3. D2 is worse than D3

u/Puzzleheaded-Ad-1866 avatar

If he's keeping his radio gig it absolutely should be criticized. Can't really expect the players to buy in when you really aren't from the jump. Program did win 18 games last year.

His initial response to doing both is that he's had to do multiple jobs on the same day prior even though they were both media related and essentially the same gig. He then chimed in that as the coach he gets to set the schedule. I'm just not buying any of it. Publicity isn't going to lead to air time nor good coaching. If they don't play well him not buying in will be blamed and it will look like a dumpster fire from the outside

Publicity does not equal quality.

Green Bay has usually teetered amongst the dregs of the Horizon League with IUPUI, so why will this change?

What division are they even?

D1, they're in the Horizon League

I forget about the horizon league every year until March Madness

u/Travbowman avatar

In the last 15 years, the horizon League has twice as many championship game appearances as BYU has trips past the first weekend of the tournament.

Let me preface this by saying: I think Gottlieb will turn out to be a bad HC. And I personally dislike Gottlieb a great deal.

However, I’ll actually go against the grain and say this kind of hire might not be the worst idea for Green Bay.

It’s not like Gottlieb can irreparably set the program back given its position on the CBB totem pole. And he could be high profile/connected enough to get some recruits/transfers that the program might not otherwise have a chance at.

Very low floor/medium-high ceiling, IMO. Kind of a “might as well give it a shot” hire that will at least be entertaining to watch.

u/boiler_engineer avatar

what's weird about it is they hired Sundance Wicks a year ago and he was proven to be a great hire. I don't understand how the same AD makes both of these hires.

u/MetalScott avatar

I think the massive disappointment of Wicks being seemingly all-in and then (understandably) leaving for Wyoming forced a bit of a panic hire. Gottlieb was a finalist for the same job last year. As a UWGB alum, I don't hate it. It'll bring attention and energy, at least until the point he shows he's a terrible coach and bails on the program. Hope that doesn't happen and it's a good starting point for his coaching career.

u/Individual_Loan_7771 avatar

I think part of it is, fellow alum, that any coach who has an ounce of success bails immediately and how can ya blame them. It's probably the least appealing campus you'll find in D1. Bum fuck nowhere, party scene is essentially non-existent, have to drive 20 minutes to even get downtown. And it's getting better but the bar scene especially even 5 yesrs ago was bad for people in their 20s. Not very appealing to college players.

So at that point the only thing worth trying is a hire like this. Not that he's a huge celeb or something but bring attention to the program, possibly bring in a little money to help it, has connections that could help. It'll likely fail but they seriously have nothing to lose. This is a good hire imo as they're at least trying something. Even if it fails it's like okay, now they're only last instead of... Last in the conference lol

Still can't believe there's a Green Bay fan from another thread that thinks Gottlieb has "extra resources" to get players through NIL.

u/spierce64006 avatar

He did list on his show this afternoon that one of his main goals is to raise some NIL money. The question is how much can he actually raise.

u/TheGreenKnight920 avatar

He spoke quite a bit about it, it sounds like he already has several donors lined up.

u/filthysven avatar

Or at least he has their credit cards

At this point it might he Gottlieb's burner

More replies
u/Individual_Loan_7771 avatar

Does he have any NIL? Then it's extra resources, that's not some crazy take. Do you know anything about UWGB? Men's basketball has been their worst program for awhile now and losing money. So I highly doubt they've had anything to offer anybody. I went there and the school thought it would blow up and compete with UW Madison and (not kidding) the campus is basically a wildlife reserve now as they bought so much property in bum fuck nowhere outside GB. Nobody wants to play there, fucking 10 minute walk to a gas station. They need any NIL they can get even if it's barely anything

Awful hire and apparently he’s still keeping his radio show?

Gotta make sure he has a job once he gets fired

More replies

Is this the guy who said Freddie Freeman’s agent withheld Braves extensions from him?

Well, a LOT more people are going to start paying attention to Green Bay basketball. That alone makes it a great hire. And if Gottlieb can get some solid asst coaches on his staff, it could possibly work out well on the court as well.

He’s gotta be running a scam.

Wouldn’t be the first time 💳

More replies
u/_Jetto_ avatar

I’ve been an asst for 8 + years and I can’t even get a fucking interview for 30k a year d3 head jobs, yet JJ and Doug get one easily 😭😭😭 okay I got one but it was hard af to get that job compared

This is literally the same thing as Pierre McGuire getting a head coaching job for the Whalers.

I wouldn’t trust certain words that come out of his mouth. Good luck GB

We got Sundance back! Sorry GB

"Pants on backwards! Pants on backwards!"

u/czechyerself avatar

The answer here is that low major teams are at more of a disadvantage for players and coaching talent than ever. You’ll see more hires like this going forward at the low major college level

Major W for sports media. Major L for Green Bay Phoenix

Thank god I don’t have to hear about his shit takes anymore
