2024 PGA Championship Bets: Final Thoughts, Betting Card, OAD

Golf’s second Major is here, with the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club next on tap to in Louisville, Kentucky, beginning Thursday. Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka headline among PGA Championship bets this week, as John Haslbauer provides his favorite picks among all the golf odds for this tourney. Below, you’ll find the best odds across betting sites for each player.

We are one sleep away from the second major of the year. My PGA Championship bets are officially all locked in for Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

There are no shortage in storylines this week between Scottie’s return as a father, Rory’s divorce, Brooks’ mind games, Spieth’s grand slam quest, and JT’s hometown ties. The weather has also become an interesting narrative to monitor, as a wet forecast may very well transform Valhalla into a much more scoreable venue for players with elite driving distance. HOW I BUILT MY PGA CHAMPIONSHIP BETTING CARD

At most any major championship, you need to be long and accurate off the tee, elite with long iron approaches and highly dependable from around the green. In the simplest terms, that continues to be the formula needed at Valhalla, so I expect we’ll see the same usual suspects who have found success in difficult scoring conditions and recent majors rise to the top of the leaderboard this week. From a weather standpoint, soft conditions should only further accentuate the importance of driving distance, which factored into my final betting card decisions.

In terms of unit allocations for my card this week, we are upping the stakes just a bit to match the high-stakes atmosphere of the second major of the year for my PGA Championship bets.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP BETS: OUTRIGHTS (4.2 UNITS)

Jon Rahm

My Bet: +2200
Best Available Odds:

It is a perfect storm of betting value on Jon Rahm this week, with his odds drifting further and further for all the wrong reasons. Despite Brooks Koepka already disproving the myth that LIV players are less prepared to contend in Majors than their PGA TOUR counterparts at the 2023 PGA Championship, Rahm gets a LIV discount this week simply for being absent on the PGA TOUR.

Statistically, Rahm has been the second best player on LIV this season behind Joaquin Niemann, and has impressively finished top-10 in every LIV event so far. His resume on comp courses like Torrey Pines, Muirfield Village, and Olympia Fields is second to none, and he’ll come with an extra chip on his shoulder after a disappointing showing at the Masters last month.

Bryson DeChambeau

My Bet: +3000
Best Available Odds:

A long and soft course is right up DeChambeau’s alley, as he’ll be able to lean on his greatest weapon – the driver – early and often at Valhalla. DeChambeau’s best round at The Masters came in its softest conditions when he paced the field for the first round lead as recent evidence of that fit.

He’s already won on Mr. Nicklaus’ course once at the 2018 Memorial Tournament, and is in excellent form once again as he loos to channel the same game plan that helped him cruise to an easy victory at Winged Foot in 2020.

Patrick Cantlay

My Bet: +4500
Best Available Odds:

“What would this guy’s odds be if you brought this field to the Memorial and played it this week?”. That’s a question I asked myself when evaluating many names at the top, as I ultimately view Muirfield Village as the closest all around comp to Valhalla Golf Club. In Patrick Cantlay’s case, I genuinely believe we would see his odds at half this number in that scenario.

Cantlay loves Nicklaus courses, as demonstrated by his two wins add five top-10s at the Memorial. He also loves Bentgrass courses in this part of the country as shown by his two BMW Championship wins since 2022. We’re still waiting to see him breakout in Majors, but I’m happy to chase that happening this week at this much of a discount.

Hideki Matsuyama

My Bet: +6600
Best Available Odds:

It’s always best to back Hideki Matsuyama when he’s flying furthest under the radar. A week after a late, surprise withdrawal at the Wells Fargo Championship would seem to be the perfect opportunity to hop back on then, as he’s managed to completely avoid any hype this week.

If healthy enough to go, Matsuyama is a major dark horse I want exposure to, as the 2021 Masters champ has four top-12 finishes over his last five starts and is flashing some of the most consistent ball striking form we’ve ever seen from him.

Will Zalatoris

My Bet: +7000
Best Available Odds:

Across every different variation of performance on comp courses, recent Majors, or long and difficult scoring venues, Will Zalatoris’ name is fixated alongside the three-headed monster of Scheffler, McIlroy, and Koepka. So why not take a shot on Zalatoris at 7x their odds?

Poor leading form did not stop him from another top-10 at the Masters this year, and his game is far from completely lost with just one missed cut since the Sony Open in January. Valhalla is an ideal fit for Zalatoris’ game, and well worth backing at this much of a discount.

Byeong Hun An

My Bet: +9000
Best Available Odds:

Of all the Majors, the PGA Championship has shown to be the one most prone to producing a surprise winner, which is enough justification for me to pull the trigger on Byeong Hun An here. An is one of the hottest players in the field this week, coming off of back to back top-5 finishes on long courses that accentuate his driving distance advantage in the same way a long and soft Valhalla Golf Club will. Already with three top-10s in Signature Events this season, An continues to build confidence contending against the best players on the PGA TOUR.

Rickie Fowler

My Bet: +30000
Best Available Odds:

This is admittedly a value bet on a mis-price earlier in the week that has since corrected to a number I would no longer endorse. With that said, Fowler is on a short list of players with proven past results at Valhalla, finishing T3 when the PGA Championship last came here in 2014. He’s shown improved form recently with a T18 at the RBC Heritage two starts ago, and was a factor last Major season where he finished T5 at the U.S. Open.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST-ROUND LEADER BETS (1 UNIT)

Wyndham Clark

My Bet: +5000
Best Available Odds:

You never know what you’re going to get with Wyndham Clark this season, as he seems to either finish top-5 or dead last week to week. Valhalla is an ideal course fit for Clark’s skillsets, however, so I’ll look to get my exposure in this market where he’s often proven to be elite in stringing together birdies in difficult scoring conditions.

Byeong Hun An

My Bet: +6000
Best Available Odds:

I love An’s combination of recent form, comp course history, and course fit for Valhalla. It’s just a little tough for me to actually picture him contending down the stretch at a Major, so I’m hedging a bit here to get exposure before the pressure really sets in.

Stephan Jaeger

My Bet: +9000
Best Available Odds:

Jaeger continues to demonstrate a fit for long and difficult courses with a steady dosage of long iron approach shots. The Houston Open champion also has top-20 finishes at the Farmers Insurance Open, Wells Fargo Championship, and Mexico Open to further support his fit on driver-heavy venues.

Taylor Pendrith

My Bet: +11000
Best Available Odds:

A top-20 machine for the last few years, Pendrith has stepped his game up a notch this past month with a win and three top-11 finishes over his last four starts. A long, driver-heavy set up this week should continue to play into the strengths of his game.

Keith Mitchell

My Bet: +12500
Best Available Odds:

Another long hitter in great ball-striking form with the ability to catch fire on the greens, Mitchell is a common FRL target for me. I don’t trust him to close down the stretch of a Major, but I would not be surprised at all to see him get off to a hot start at Valhalla.

Aaron Rai

My Bet: +13000
Best Available Odds:

A glaring outlier compared to the other bombers on my FRL card this week, Rai’s run of Thursday dominance has always been course fit-proof, so I’m not afraid to back him up against this 7,609 yard behemoth.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP PROPS (3 UNITS)

Top South African: Dean Burmester

My Bet: +210
Best Available Odds:

The South African market is much more tame this week than we’ve seen in other parts of the year. Opposing Burmester in this market are Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Erik van Rooyen, Thriston Lawrence, and Ryan Van Velzen. Of that group, only Bezuidenhout and van Rooyen have a legimate case to challenge Burmester, but neither have shown recent form or any past Major performance that is particularly threatening.

Burmester is by far the longest driver in this market, suits the course well, and is in fantastic form with three international victories over his last 10 starts.

Winning Margin: Playoff

My Bet: +350

Valhalla has developed a reputation for producing great theater on Sunday, even if the course itself does not do much to excite from an architectural design standpoint. “Funneling” has been a growing narrative this week, as many player comments suggest Valhalla often forces the field to layup in the same areas, which should create a bunched up leaderboard throughout the week.

Every prior professional event contested at Valhalla has has been decided by one stroke or in a playoff, and this adds a little extra rooting interest down the stretch beyond the usual outright sweat.

Top-20 Finish: Patrick Reed

My Bet: +400
Best Available Odds:

Sneakily having one of the most consistent seasons of any player on the LIV Tour, Reed also happens to have one of the most consistent resumes at Majors as well, particularly on long and challenging set ups. He has just one missed cut over his last 18 Major starts, including 10 top-20s over that stretch.

ONE AND DONE

My Pick: Jon Rahm

I am all in on Jon Rahm this week, and that’s regardless of his outright value which has continues to drift inexplicably throughout the week. It’s never a bad idea to use LIV players in OAD, as most leagues only leave your four opportunities to do so. With Rahm, he should come motivated after a disappointing effort at the Masters, and he has always proven to be a great fit on this style of course.

If not Rahm, I would also consider Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, or Patrick Cantlay as OAD picks.
