Official timeline book has the “I am Iron Man” press conference at Spring 2008

Easter Egg/Detail

Personally, I love when major MCU events line up with their irl release dates, so this is great

But iirc Iron Man 2 takes place 6 months later, and it’s set fairly firmly in 2010. Imo just ignore that “6 months later” title card, but wanted to mention the reasoning many fans had for putting this press conference in late 2009

The six months later was retconned to mean six months after the time it takes for Vanko to build his suit. So Iron Man in 2008 and Iron Man 2 in 2010, as you'll see later in the book

Tbh that’s a pretty smart workaround

I agree one hundred percent. It seems like that time table was always sort of in flux. If you read the comic adaption of Iron Man 2, it removes all mention of "six months later."

There's also a line in Iron Man 2 where Tony says that he broke the perimeter "like three years ago" or that Tony slept with Christine "last year" so you can kind of tell that the timeline for the film was sort of shifting as they were filming

Yeah, like i remember people going how did they let the homecoming error slip, Marvel has never messed with their timeline, it was always perfect and i am like........Dude the Phase one timeline is a clusterfu**.

Wait... I thought that was always the timeline?

It was originally intended to refer to the events of Iron Man 1, Marvel even released an official timeline prior to Avengers that had Iron Man 2 placed as happening 6 months after IM1, even Jon Favreau has talked about this being set 6 months after IM1 and so on.

While Vanko building his suit was originally meant to cover the gap between the 6 months from 1 and the main events of 2.

But that was later retconned as Marvel wants Iron Man to be set in 2008 and Avengers in 2012, which doesn't work if you stick to the original timeline.

I think I prefer the retcon that it's referring to him building his suit to be honest.

Yeah i agree and helps fixing the issue (you still have the issue in where Pepper says that Tony and Christine "encounter" was a year ago). As now you can say it took a year or two for Vanko to build his suit and then he spent the next 6 months planning how he will get to Stark now that his armor is complete.

The main events I love happening on film release dates are this, the Avengers fighting in the Battle of New York, and Thanos’ snap in 2018

Would love to know how the timeline book deals with the Homecoming slip-up? And is Incredible Hulk placed after Iron Man or is it in 2010?

u/MythiccMoon avatar

Incredible Hulk is 2010! Ms. Minutes mentions a few retcons that have to be true

Homecoming I believe is 2016 but I’ll confirm later on

Marvel timeline is just screwed up. I mean the biggest one is still 8 years later but this one confuses me too.

u/MythiccMoon avatar

I think for that one and this one we just have to change the title card and it’s all good

Although I think Vulture may have a line about “8 years ago,” and you could argue his daughter Liz should’ve been further along artistically in 2012 than that kid’s drawing showed… but no huge deals

u/CaptainIronHammer1 avatar

Maybe Liz was originally supposed to be a freshman with the rest of them (4 years makes a difference in artistic ability) but something changed and they forgot to change that bit

I think the mistake simply came about as being that the Homecoming crew thought Avengers was set in 2009 and not 2012, cause if you literally follow the original timeline of Iron Man 1 being in 2008 and Iron Man/Thor/Hulk being 6 months later puts it in late 2008, thus placing Avengers in 2009

I have always speculated that maybe the Homecoming team were going with the info given in the early films before they were or not knowing they were retconned and going with the idea that Homecoming likewise occured in 2017 and nto 2016, like if Iron Man 1 was 2008 and IM2/Thor/Hulk is 6 months after that, then that places Avengers in 2009, do the maths, place Homecoming in 2017 (which is further supported by the age they gave to Aaron Davis) you have 8 years later, so i think that is where the mistake came from, especially since the only official timeline Marvel gave us at the time which was for Fury's Big Week did went with the idea that Phase 1 occured so close to each other.

My headcanon is Liz is just stupid. Nah that’s so mean tho, maybe she had an off screen sister we never saw

Other than 8 years later, it really isn’t that screwed up. It’s way more concise than a lot of other timelines.
