Seriously though, a Penny Marshall series would be great

It’s a fun early Whoopi movie followed by three absolute classics followed by three movies that are admittedly all pretty forgettable but are still entertaining and feature big stars at interesting moments in their careers. Big, Awakenings, and A League of Their Own are all legitimately great, and while Renaissance Man, The Preacher’s Wife, and Riding in Cars with Boys definitely aren’t great, they go down very easily.

I almost wonder if Penny is seen as more mid than she actually is because people associate her with her brother—a director who I’d say only made one great movie, a few good movies, and a bunch of bad movies that are way worse than Penny’s bad movies.

Anyway, I thought it was funny that Griffin acknowledged the buzz he created with his “confirmed” comment on here, but for real, give us Penny!

Riding in Cars with Boys is quietly excellent and a reminder that no matter how much of an asshole James Woods is, he still brings the pathos game like few others.

I fully support a PS run for the 2 friends.

Making James Woods such a good actor is proof God hates us.

You've made a case, and for once - I like it!

I'll just say that I consider Awakenings to be a perfect movie.

I understand why people find it sentimental but it's my favourite Robin Williams, a true story, and it is one of the most profoundly moving movies I've seen.

I know it's liked well and had major nominations. I'm just saying: this one's a big "It's not broccoli" one for me if you've never watched it based on thinking it's just good/solid.

For me: it's heartbreakingly good.

I love Awakenings! Is it well liked? I don’t see/hear it discussed very often but I kind of assumed it had a reputation as being schmaltzy or whatever

Well it was a best pic nom, acting nom, and reviewed very well.

But I don't think it's often thought of, and the few times I've heard it come up during, say, movie or Oscar podcast discussion, the general vibe is "good, but schmaltzy".

I discovered it on cable in 2002 or 2003 when I was a teenager and I remember my mom sort of made fun of me for enjoying it. “THAT movie?” The impression I got was that it was sort of immediately derided.

I liked it back then, though.

I recently watched every Penny Marshall and I was shocked to find it has a 3.7 on Letterboxd because I thought it was dreadful. I understand why people like it, but it's not for me.

A League of Their Own would be an all timer episode that Kathy Rich could guest on.

The kid ate the PODCAST!

gotta get a baseball-head or two on the show.

Paul F Tompkins and Lauren Lapkus would be a great pair for that one.

Real question what is that one great Garry Marshall movie for you?

I think the case could be made for Pretty Woman just as a star vehicle for Julia Roberts that had a pretty big cultural impact, but even that’s being a little generous.

Yeah it's certainly matter of subjective opinion like all of these. I'm mixed to negative on all of his films I've seen recently including Pretty Woman. Something like The Princess Diaries is the one I need to revisit since I quite like it when I was 9 years old.

The Princess Diaries is so good! I'm a little older than you, and it really played well for me as a teenager.

I've watched it a couple of times since and it's just always a charming time. The cast is stacked - love that Sandra Oh is still game to reference her iconic "the Queen is coming" phone call

it's certainly his guarantor

Steve Zahn is incredible in Riding in Cars With Boys. Legitimately worthy of an Oscar nom.

Steve Zahn, a national treasure

I really expected to like that movie and ended up not, but Steve Zahn almost made me cry on multiple occasions.

I think they'll pick her someday. Part of the Griffin gag was that picking her would be quite plausible, I think.

Big is sort of in that Die Hard zone of movies that are just too incredibly good.

Big is sort of in that Die Hard zone

of "classics with a couple poorly-dated gags"?

This miniseries being "confirmed" and then unconfirmed for Kevin Costner is this show's Bill Buckner moment

I say do a Marshall Series. Penny AND Garry. Also the movie We Are Marshall.
