Men's Tennis Falls to Nationally-Ranked Middlebury in NCAA Tournament

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Allegheny College men's tennis wrapped up its postseason run on Saturday morning with a 5-0 loss to No. 7-ranked Middlebury College in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships.

The Panthers (18-4), hosts of the regional pod, prevailed in only the second all-time meeting between the two programs. Nationally-ranked Middlebury advances to Sunday's regional final and will face either No. 10 Trinity University (Texas) or No. 25 MIT.

All three doubles matches ended with identical 8-2 scores. In the top spot, Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) and David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) clashed with the fifth-ranked duo in the country in Neel Epstein and Robby Ward.

The Panthers clinched the match with victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.

Rodriguez took two games from Julian Wu, the fifth-ranked singles player in the country, in the first set and was up 1-0 in the second. Hedlund battled to win three consecutive games and tie his second set against No. 28-ranked Noah Laber at 3-all before the match concluded.
