Xennial Confession. Sorry friends.

I've always gotten so much flak for this because I was a teenager through the 90s...but....I absolutely cannot stand Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, or Nirvana. Lol. Not even one song from either. I don't know a single person I've grown up with that doesn't look at me funny when I say this out loud. OK....Let me have it, or change my mind with a song I possibly haven't heard from one of them that's got a different sound than their usual MTV popular stuff, which is what I was mostly exposed to.

That's cool. I don't like 95% of the pop/top 40/r&b/etc music from that era that most people obsess over. People are allowed to like/dislike different things. Don't be sorry about it. My skin is practically flannel but I wouldn't give you any crap for that.

Lol I like that view. Thanks! So I'm guessing no chumbawumba for you then?

I mean. I get knocked down. But I do indeed get up again.

u/pwilk138 avatar

My favorite thing about Chumbawumba is that they were straight up anarcho-punks, yet for a few months in 97 (and plenty of drunken parties/bars thereafter) all the normies were belting out the lyrics to Tubthumping in blissful ignorance.

u/Natural_Ad_1717 avatar

Do they owe us a living? Of course they do.

Since we're making confessions... I absolutely hate Chumbawamba Tubthumping . I also hate the New Radicals Get What You Give.

It feels good to get that off my chest.

Hey, I hate Jesus Jones’ Right Here Right Now

Ouch! That's a good one!

More replies

I hate Tubthumping but Chumbawumba were a great band.

Anarchy is a brilliant album and they were always phenomenal live.

That song just had a weird trajectory.

Their song "Mary Mary" is a banger I listen to very often.

Showbusiness! is one of the most fun live albums I've heard, and I still rock Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records regularly lol

Hey everyone, I found Marilyn Manson.

Wrong. Though I did have some of my ribs removed.

If we’re making confessions, I never liked Marilyn Manson’s stuff .. at. all.

more reply More replies

Ooh me too! And that New Radicals song was EVERYWHERE.

Loath both of them myself

Yeah, fuck the new radicals. Not only they sucked, they were not new nor radical.

Lol Tubthumping was such a weird aberration from them. Give "Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records" and "Never Mind The Ballots" a chance (for some reason the 18 minute long last track on that isnt on spotify, and its a banger), they're wildly different.

u/temporarycreature avatar

Nah, they're a great band, but I like them a lot more than just for the single everyone knows them for. They got over seven albums and lots of History.

Well yeah, that stuff is awful. Not the point. OP just clearly hasn’t heard the right songs. I’ll make them a mix tape.

“My skin is practically flannel”. I love that! ☺️

I didn’t hate grunge but It wasn’t my favorite at the time or now. I was way more into industrial and goth. The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, Joy Division, MLWTTKK, KMFDM, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus and so on were what I was listening too. And Bjork, PJ Harvey, and Tori Amos

u/loptopandbingo avatar

Sisters of Mercy

Man, First and Last and Always is such a solid album

Sounds like the music I was listening to in college! I wasn’t allowed to listen to anything besides country and old jazz until I was 13 so it took awhile to figure out what I really liked.

My Xennial confession is I can’t stand Tori Amos or Ani DiFranco. I’m a bad queer.

I can't stand either Tori or DiFranco either lol In my friend group I'm the only one.

I have tried to like Ani so many times, but just don't! I mean, I don't dislike her, but I rarely turn her music on by choice.

Same. There’s literally one song I like because I had to hunt it down for a playlist for my best friend in high school, but I haven’t listened to it by choice in decades.

PJ Harvey 🙌

Yesss, this is my later '90s. The "grunge"/alternative scene hit here in the Seattle area pretty hard and a little differently and earlier than most places, and I'm '77 so it was at the right time for me. I listened mostly to grunge/alt rock/metal/classic rock in the early '90s. And some basic industrial, like NIN and SP. But mid '90s I was aaaalll about Tori and Ani and PJ, like the edgier side of Lilith Fair, and got heavily into goth and industrial. All those bands you listed plus like Godflesh, Front 242, Apoptygma Berzerk, Faith and the Muse, Cocteau Twins, Gene Loves Jezebel, Fields of the Nephilim, Suspiria, Ministry, Front Line Assembly, Laibach, Wumpscut, Christian Death, etc. etc. etc. times a million. I still have most of these CDs lol. Such a huge part of my life and who I am.

u/squishpitcher avatar

Yeah, those bands/songs feel much more iconic of that time period for me.

NIN is 🔥

MLWTTKK

I never stopped being a fan. I finally got a car radio that can load music from a thumb drive. They were one of the first bands I loaded onto that device.

I feel that same way about RUSH. Couldn’t get past the singing. The drummer is fantastic though. But up here in Canada you can get kicked out of the country for having this opinion. It’s a secret, shhh

Your secret is safe with me

Fellow Canadian here, I've never been a big fan of Rush but I did appreciate their role in I Love You Man

https://youtu.be/iq3yjfoorsU?si=PSY_C6-yZj4-D2em

In the US, but I do have friends that would disown me if I admitted I felt how you do about them. Just not my type of noise, but great drummer!

u/Emergency-Pack-5497 avatar

"Hey everybody! Josherline over here doesn't like Rush! I won't tell nobody else."

More replies

At least they aren't a core music group for our age bracket. I also can't stand them though.

“What about the voice of Geddy Lee / how did it get so high? / I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy / I know him, and he does / then you’re fact checking cuz” - Stereo, by Pavement.

Yeah, I know that Rush is a a technically brilliant band. But, that singing shuts me out. My loss, I’m sure.

Canadian here and RUSH is not our best band by any means. Hate when people say that say that shit tbh.

We have tons of great music across many genres up here.

u/Josherline avatar

Agreed!

You're allowed to not like Rush, but you'd be burned at the stake for speaking ill of The Hip.

But yeah, Rush would have just been another band if it weren't for Neal Peart. They weren't even all that big in Canada really, they were more popular outside the country than within.

I love Nirvana so, so much, but I can't throw xennial stones...

I've never seen The Goonies.

Oh wow. You need to make your own confession post about this one lol.

Same here, not even the faintest idea of what it's about.

I won't give you shit for it, but my fellows you HAVE to watch it at least once! It still holds up today as a great adventure film.

I don't know if every part holds up, but... it's very '80s in the best way possible.

How is that even possible. It was on TV every day for 10 years.

Edited

If you decide to watch it, go in with no expectations. So many people on the internet say they ended up not liking it because it was over-hyped.

I will say that the core group of friends really do give me some nostalgia for my old crew who used to bike around the neighborhood.

I mean, when you are 8 years old, you just watch it because you think Chunk is cool and you think that you and your friends could legitimately find treasure in your own neighborhood.

Me too! I don't even know if I want to watch it now!

Well, it's too late now

You're no longer welcome here! J/k, all good, you have your CD wallet and we have ours.

Specifically I remember those case logic leather (or faux leather) zip cases were all the rage. I remember having the 4 cd per page one that had like 50 or 60 pages filled to the brim front and back. Lol

Even better was when you got to burn your own mixes. Each MP3 took like 20-30 mins to download. And if you wanted more than a few at once, you leave the downloads going overnight and hope they don't all fail LOL

Brit pop or just Brit music was way more my vibe than any of those (Pulp, Blur, Jesus and Mary Chain) but I do have more memories associated with the bands you mentioned if that makes any sense? My older siblings loved them, so thats probably why

Hey, you're allowed to have your own tastes. Just because they were popular doesn't mean you have to be a fan.

u/Gas_Station_Cheese avatar

I never cared for Pearl Jam. The other two had a couple songs I liked, but I was never really into them in a big way. Stone Temple Pilots is another I wasn't really a fan of. My brother, no the other hand, fucking loved all those bands.

u/chasinfreshies avatar

Earl STP, yes. Later stuff kinda died

u/MexicanVanilla22 avatar

Aweee I really liked No. 4 by STP. I think it was on par with all their other greatest hits. (Hmmm....is 'the Best of' still a thing??? If so we should have certainly seen an STP version by now)

u/fire_n_ice avatar

I still maintain that the intro to Dead and Bloated is one of the best out there.

Hey I'm not alone! WHEW.

u/LovelyLieutenant avatar

Fuck no. I cannot stand Eddie Vedder's singing.

u/ratiofarm avatar

I loved it all when it came out but I cannot fucking stand any grunge now. When I got turned on to Pavement, GBV, post-rock bands and the like, I just couldn’t deal with grunge anymore. I think grunge definitely moved the needle though, as far as opening the broader public’s mind up to what could be considered music and listenable. I still respect a lot of those bands even if I don’t like their music anymore.

Ya the other bands i love but i never did like pearl jam too much personally. Yellow Ledbetter (sp?) was an obsession for a bit (still like it!) but that's the only song that clicked for me.

Same. Just never clicked with Pearl Jam or STP.

I’ll never understand Radiohead, and I’ve honestly tried.

Radiohead is one of those bands where I get why people like them, Thom Yorke is talented and I can appreciate the songwriting.

But the music leaves me utterly cold and I have never really enjoyed any of their songs. (Aside from Creep but tbh that’s 100% a nostalgia thing at this point)

u/JJStray avatar

I can’t name one Radiohead song. But I know Scott tenerman loved them

u/Roseheath22 avatar

I kind of agree. I like Creep and Karma Police but that’s about it, and I’d prefer listening to good covers rather than the originals.

I guess you could say they left you High and Dry

More replies

I can appreciate them but I always skip it if they come on my playlist even if I don’t know who it is.

More replies

I'm with you, but some of it actually grew on me later in life.

I can get down with early Pearl Jam and STP now and will put them on when I'm working in the garage. I really like Soundgarden and Audioslave now.

I still can't stand Nirvana though. And while I recognize that Layne Staley was incredibly talented as a vocalist, AiC is just depressing to listen to.

u/zoebehave avatar

My appreciation is growing for all but still, I'd change the station to listen to Kesha. No regrets.

Elliott Smith can ruin my f***ing day though.

Edited

Is it weird that I like some Pearl Jam songs but none are from their album Ten?

I felt pressure to like Nirvana but also just like a few songs.

Lol I only like their songs from Ten
