Cowboys QB Coach Building Foundation With Trey Lance: 'It's Nice!'

The Dallas Cowboys acquired Trey Lance late last offseason, and quarterback coach Scott Tolzien is relishing the chance to work with Lance full-time this offseason.

The Dallas Cowboys acquired quarterback Trey Lance via trade last season, and the former No. 3 overall pick spent his team's time getting up to speed on Mike McCarthy's Texas Coast Offense.

Without a full offseason, Lance was behind the eightball due to coming to The Star on August 25. It's not that he was going to usurp backup Cooper Rush, but from a learning standpoint, Lance was a rookie in Dallas and didn't have the full offseason of work behind him.

Now, as the Cowboys' offseason program begins to pick up pace, quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien has spoken of the benefits of having a full offseason's work with Lance.

“It's always nice when you get a full offseason with a guy,” Tolzien said. “So you can get a guy like we got Trey week one last year, you kind of playing a little catchup. But it's nice being able to start with a foundation and kind of learn it as you go. It's no different than jumping into a math class after you move midway through the year, it's nice to teach it from the grassroots so he can hear the origins of everything.”

With Tolzien and Lance getting the amount of work necessary to help push the former San Francisco 49er along, this offseason will prove pivotal for Trey.

As no quarterbacks on Dallas' roster are signed beyond 2024, this offseason is a chance for Lance to show his talents, and he is expected to showcase his skills in the Cowboys' preseason games.

Afterall, Dallas already knows what it has in Dak Prescott and Rush, but having been in the NFL since 2021, Lance is an unknown commodity due to only having four starts and 102 passing attempts in his entire NFL career to date.

His work with Tolzien will prepare him for what will be a decisive offseason for Lance's NFL future.

With Trey now getting a better lay of the land at The Star, perhaps this is the start of a new beginning for the former first-round pick.

And with Prescott and Rush's futures in doubt beyond 2024, maybe, just maybe, this offseason will be an audition of sorts for Lance in Dallas.
