Newcastle will have Callum Wilson available for Sunday’s clash with Brentford, but Anthony Gordon is still a doubt for the game, confirmed Eddie Howe.
The former Everton winger is dealing with an ankle injury picked up in defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night.
Gordon is pushing to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 this summer so will be desperate to play and impress, but Howe could not confirm whether he will make it this weekend or not.
‘We will have to wait and see how he is today,’ Howe told a press conference on Friday of Gordon. ‘Not 100 per cent sure.’
The 23-year-old played the full game at Old Trafford, but did say his ankle was ‘really sore’ after the final whistle.
Wilson has missed the last two games after scoring in wins over Sheffield United and Burnley, but Howe ‘anticipates he will be fit’ to take on the Bees.
However, Tino Livramento is out of action for what is left of the season due to an ankle injury, joining the likes of Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Joe Willock on the sidelines.
There remains a chance that Newcastle could edge ahead of Chelsea into sixth place on the final day of the season, needing to win and the Blues to lose againstBournemouth.
That would mean European football for the Magpies next season and Howe is pushing hard to achieve it.
‘It’s a big last day for us, no denying that,’ he said. ‘We go to Brentford knowing we have to do our part, which is win the game. Then we’re in the hands of other clubs.
‘The players are determined to finish on a high. The last few games have been difficult because we could have got more points but haven’t.’
