A large chunk of Wednesday’s MIAA Board of Directors meeting was dedicated to clarifying and tightening up the MIAA Rule Book in regards to tournament-related issues.

After MIAA Board President Stephanie Sibley asked for a moment of silence to honor the memory of Roger Bacon and Don Fredericks, both of whom were instrumental in MIAA basketball and baseball, the board went to work and quickly approved the 2025 MIAA fiscal year budget.

The board voted unanimously to approve the annual MIAA budget for 2025. It also voted to approve the organization of the committees’ organizational structure, powers and duties and membership composition, approve handbook clarification in accordance with adopted language (Rule 87 Student Eligibility Waiver and Rule 89.1.3 regarding Hearing and Appeals).

MIAA Executive Director Bob Baldwin took the floor and asked for the board to approve the following based on recommendations from the Executive Leadership Committee (a) Rule 93 regarding MIAA Tournament Philosophy (b) Tournament cut off dates (c) Opting-In vs. Opting-Out of the statewide tournament (d) formats (e) schedule and commitment dates and (f) alignment process.

All were approved unanimously with the exception of the Opt-In/Opt-Out component. That vote, however, did pass pretty easily 12-2-1, the dissenting votes coming from Quabbin’s Mark Miville and Hingham’s Jim Quatromoni, with Cambridge’s Tom Arria abstaining.

The only news from the sister associations came from MSSADA (Massachusetts Secondary School Athletic Directors Association). Speaking for MSSADA, Quatromoni said that there was ongoing communication with the Tournament Management Committee (TMC) over the controversial margin of victory component used in part to determine MIAA statewide tournament power rankings for postseason play.

In the final piece of business, the board unanimously approved a member school application from Argosy Collegiate Charter School based in Fall River. The school’s nickname is the Navigators and the athletic director is Jonathan Murray.
