Review: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley, born august 30th of 1797 and died februari 1st of 1851, was most known for this book: Frankenstein (, or the modern Prometheus). She was married to the writer Percy Bysshe Shelley. She wrote the book when she was 19, during a summer with bad weather. Also the classics The Vampyre from Polidori and Darkness from Byron> were written at that time.

Based on theories by forgotten scientists Frankenstein creates life and then leaves his creation behind. The creature starts out with a hideous countenance, but gentle disposition. (How looks can be deceiving, and how people (still) judge others based on their looks). Through the hardships he is put through, at some point he only seems to have hatred left; hatred for his creator and he will do everything to exact his vengeance.

This book was on my TBR for so long, the expectation was also very high. Did it meet my expectation: yes ... and no. I have seen multiple movies where the monster of Frankenstein makes an appearence. Usualy his rising is accompanied with lightning, but that is not in the book (that's a not meeting my wrong expectation). The style of the writing is definitely not what we're used to nowadays, but don't read classics if that puts you off. The story does give you suspense and an insight into what Frankensteins creation goes through and feels about that. Being alone, he longs for a compagnion and threatens Frankenstein to create him one, or else ... Relentlessly his creation hunts him and the people close to him.

Except for the last chapter, which is about 20 pages long, each chapter is 6 to 8 pages, which make for een easy read. For me this is still a must read for people that enjoy the Fantasy, Science Fiction and Horror genre. Let's get back to the roots of these genres.
