Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are back filming as Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us.

And despite the fact season two of the much-loved post-apocalyptic show - based on the video game series of the same name - is not due to hit Sky Atlantic and NOW until 2025, US distributor HBO have just given fans two teaser photos to help with the wait.

In the pics, Pascal’s Joel can be seen talking to someone outside at night, lit by a warm glow of what appear to be fairy lights. His expression is one of slight concern, suggesting the warmth of the lighting may be deceptive about the plot of the scene.

In the second photo, Ramsey’s Ellie is ready for action as she stalks through an abandoned-looking building with a rifle at the ready in her hands.

The Last of Us season two was confirmed by its co-showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann after only two episodes of the show’s original series had aired. “I'm humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie's journey,” Druckmann shared at the time.

Fans are aware that season two may be the show’s last, however, as while the show is undoubtedly popular enough to run for more series, its creators may decide that the full story has been told by the end of season two.

The Last of Us’ video game franchise is only two games long, and season two of the TV show is believed to be being based on the second instalment. Golden Globe Award nominee Kaitlyn Dever has been cast as Abby Anderson for season two, confirming that some if not all of the plot will follow The Last of Us 2’s story.

Fans needn’t despair completely about the idea that the series may be a short lived one, as speaking early in 2024, Druckmann hinted at how a spin-off show based on the lives of season one episode three characters Bill and Frank “certainly has been pitched” to studio higher-ups.

The Last of Us season two will air on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the future.
