One of Hollywood’s most prominent faces, Robert Pattinson, boasts a stellar career with the Twilight Saga and Matt Reeves’ The Batman standing out as the crowning jewels. However, like many other actors in the industry, he too had his share of struggles in the past before making it big. Born in London, the star faced a tough time in cracking his way into showbiz. Already possessing prowess with acting, he also resorted to the territory of extending his wit to make it through.
Hilariously enough, the 38-year-old has admitted to lying on his resume and fabricating stories to clinch roles before becoming a popular face alongside the Kristen Stewart starrer movies. Moreover, one of his stories also involved a working member of the British royal family, Prince William, into the mix, and outrageously enough, many fell for his story.
Prince William reference landed Twilight to Robert Pattinson
In 2005, Robert Pattinson appeared as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, marking one of his first mainstream appearances, even if for a side role. Thereafter, however, he remained unemployed for three years. Itching to make his big break into the movie business, the actor found himself in pursuit of Hollywood and Los Angeles. Yet, without any potential connections and leads, he lied about studying drama with none other than Prince William, which he opened up about on The Graham Norton Show.
“I hadn’t worked for three years – I was unemployed in London – and when people asked what I’d been doing, I told people I went to RADA [Royal Academy of Dramatic Art] with Prince William.”
Remarkably, the story worked out in his favor. The British actor’s accent helped boost the credibility of his fabrication as he admitted that “People would think, ‘You’re English, I completely believe you!'” Soon after, he made his big breakthrough with the role of Edward Cullen in 2008’s Twilight.
Finally, he would go on to hold on to that role until 2012’s Breaking Dawn- Part 2 with the success of bringing him a fortune worth $100 million. Yet, he hardly shies away from this lesser-known skill of his even now.
Christopher Nolan once caught Robert Pattinson lying
The famed actor found his way to big success, landing the character of Neil for Tenet, in his first and only collaboration with Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan. Unfortunately, during the process of filming the flick, he also had an overlapping opportunity to audition for Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
To manage this complexity, he faked a “family emergency” excuse to the director, as per his talks with The Irish Times. However, the latter immediately caught hold of him and remarked “You’re doing the Batman, aren’t you?” although without any hard feelings.
Similarly, after the first Twilight movie, he made up a story claiming that he was an American from Michigan or Denver. Surprisingly for him, this again backfired when the producers recognized him during the auditions for Transformers 2, landing him in hot soup. Furthermore, stories of him being homeless and a story about him witnessing a clown die in a circus car explosion also turned out to be interview lies, adding dynamics to his persona.
