Days after achieving promotion to League One, Wrexham took a decision beyond imagination. The Red Dragons released not one but eight first-team players and decided to extend their stay at STōK Cae Ras. While this bold move suggests that Ryan Reynolds and Co. will be looking to bring in new names, manager Phil Parkinson believes the Welsh side already has players that will ‘keep taking the club forward.’

Wrexham skipper Luke Young, defender Ben Tozer, and long-serving goalkeeper Rob Lainton were among the names that the soon-to-be League One side didn’t give a contract extension. The rest included the defender duo of Jordan Tunnicliffe and Callum McFadzean, Aaron Hayden, Owen Cushion, and Dan Davies. But Parkinson has an explanation for the club’s strong decision. “The aim has always been to improve what we have got in each transfer window but also maintaining our key players,” he said while addressing the media and as compiled by the Leader

“We have got a good core of players. We have always recruited with the long-term future in mind,” he continued while emphasizing the importance of signing players who are ‘good enough‘ to be a long-term solution for the club. “Some players move on along the way and others come in. But I feel we have recruited players who can carry on with us and keep taking the club forward,” concluded the 56-year-old English boss.

Unfortunately, for clubs that are rising through the ranks quickly, these kinds of changes are mostly unavoidable. However, in order to guarantee the team’s successive progress, tough calls must be considered. Let’s hope the released players have understood the club’s decision. Speaking of which, one player can’t seem to accept his Wrexham exit.

It’s heartbreaking to see Hayden going through such emotional upheaval as he faces the brutal truth of his departure. Notably, Hayden joined Wrexham from Carlisle United in 2021 and has since accumulated 86 appearances, the highest among all the clubs he has played for in his career. With 20 goals and 3 assists, he emerged as a crucial player in Phil Parkinson’s squad, playing a significant role in securing the National League title and subsequent promotion to League One.

Let’s hope the others don’t experience similar emotional turmoil and can gracefully close their beautiful chapter with Wrexham. Rest, it remains to be seen whether Phil Parkinson will make further changes or keep the squad intact.
