Winter Haven QB John Kostuch sharpens running ability for Blue Devils ahead of 2024 season

Last preseason, Winter Haven's John Kostuch used a quarterback-designed run to scamper for a touchdown in a game against Golden Gate.

It was the only score in a meaningless exhibition game, but the play made Kostuch realize how pertinent it is to use his legs in specific situations.

Kostuch had a modest 49 carries for 106 yards last season. He also threw for 1,197 yards and 11 touchdowns, which helped the Blue Devils to a 7-4 record.

There was a period of reflection after an early playoff exit and, after pondering certain football situations, now he wants to run even more.

“Using the run more has really opened up my game,” Kostuch said. “I feel that moving around and being mobile is something that will continue benefitting my team.”,

This off-season, Kostuch has been busy running on his own, as well as staying in shape amid the baseball season. Each day he also practices the 40-yard dash.

Kostuch has been competing in various camps, including invitation-only Elite 11 Regional QB competition, US Army Bowl National Combine, the Polk County 863 Showcase and the Webber International University Prospect Camp.

Additionally, the senior-to-be worked with former Florida State and Buffalo Bills running back Karlos Williams, who specializes in speed training. The Winter Haven gunslinger also trained with NFL trainer Tom Shaw for speed and agilities.

And of course, he’s doing all of this to rack up as many Winter Haven wins as possible, with a long-term goal to play at the next level, of course.

“I’m hoping my high academics and good test scores will go along with great play on the field to help me find the best fit for playing at the next level,” he said.

Winter Haven is gearing up for its intrasquad scrimmage at 7 p.m. Friday at Denison Stadium, while the spring game is set for 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 23, also at Denison Stadium.
