Local student Elyda Hick’s ‘Where Hope Began’ will hang in the U.S Capitol

WASHINGTON – Following high anticipation, Congressional District’s 2024 Congressional Art Competition results were revealed Monday. Kentucky’s 1st District representative, James Comer, was pleased to recognize the top three contenders.

“…My office received some incredible pieces of art this year and I want to congratulate Elyda, Rachel, and Elena on being selected as this year’s winners. I am excited to display this artwork in the U.S. Capitol building and my offices in both Washington and Tompkinsville,” said Congressman Comer.

From Metcalfe County High School, Elyda Hicks is the 2024 winner of the competition. The drawing is titled “Where Hope Began” and depicts Mary and Joesph holding Jesus after birth. Hick’s piece demonstrates incredible detail of texture and vibrance from the hay to their robes. This drawing also incorporates symbolism with the cross emitting luminance over Jesus.

Unnamed

In addition to having her work hang in the U.S Capitol for one year, she is invited to a reception held in Washington D.C. for recognition in June 2024. Winners in the past had scholarship offers, free trips, and more benefits but more prize information for Elyda will be updated in the coming weeks on their website.

Second place went to Union County High School student Rachel Greenwell for “Blue Collar Bluegrass” which will be displayed in Congressman Comer’s Washington, D.C. office. Student Elena Pruett of Christian County High School came in third with “Derby Finish Line” that will hang in Congressman Comer’s Tompkinsville, Kentucky office.
