Marist wins state title in overtime

Marist School won the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 6A girls’ soccer state championship 4-3 over Roswell in overtime on May 9 at McEachern High School.

The win marked DeKalb’s only GHSA soccer championship in 2024 and was a rematch of 2023’s 6A girls’ soccer championship, which Roswell won 2-0.

Marist’s win also gave the program 19-win seasons for the second consecutive season and marked Marist’s third state championship in the previous six seasons, with the other two titles won in 4A. Since 1997, Marist and fellow DeKalb private school St. Pius X Catholic High School have combined for 22 state championships in girls’ soccer. Marist has won 10, St. Pius has won 11, and the two schools tied in the state title game in 2001.

The 2024 state title game was the 12th overall state championship for Marist in girls’ soccer.

Marist won its 2024 state title thanks to a hat-trick by Hannah Faklaris, who scored her third goal in overtime to give Marist the lead with just over eight minutes left in the game. Faklaris also scored Marist’s game-tying goal to send the contest into overtime.

Grayson Rodgers scored first for Marist and was the only athlete besides Faklaris to score for the War Eagles in the title game.

The 4-3 win against Roswell gave Marist a six-game winning streak to end the season. The War Eagles outscored opponents 31-6 over the final six games of the season.
