Who was runner up for best supporting actress in 2023?

Discussion

JLC won, to some people's shock (not mine) but who was second? it was essentially a 3 person race with kerry condon and angela bassett likely in 2nd or 3rd, but who do you think actually came in second?

For me Kerry Condon should have won. Stephanie Hsu did way better than JLC in EEAAO.

I still don't understand JLC winning. Like nothing screams Oscar for that performance. Goes to show how there are so many factors to win the Oscar.

it was the most memorable of the performances largely because eeaao fans memed it everywhere and got a fuck ton of acclaim critics. people loved it until it became clear she was gonna get an oscar push

She campaigned hard, it was the best picture winner and she is an industry veteran. And to me she was a lot better than Hsu. Not that she should have won

Also that it was a transformative performance with lots of makeup and prosthetics. Academy loves those "you can barely recognize them/turn someone beautiful into someone ugly"-roles.

She had a narrative of being overdue for an Oscar as well, but maybe that's what you meant by industry veteran.

I don’t think JLC necessarily had an overdue narrative since she had never been in the Oscar conversation before, let alone nominated prior to EEAAO. But I do think her being a nepo baby and a Hollywood favorite helped since people were excited to finally award her with a major win. I think she won a Golden Globe years back and obviously won at SAG, but other than that, she was mostly just loved for her genre films. Either way, I’m still shocked she managed to win the Oscar from all her campaigning.

Lifetime achievement Oscar. She probably should have been nominated several times already, but surprisingly it was her first.

She also lucked up with the nepo baby talk and she got leaned into it. The industry rewarded her because they’re all a bunch of nepo babies and wanted to reward one of their own.

Hard agree.

Kerry was absolutely second. BAFTA can much more crossover with the Oscars than GG or CC. Plus, her film did very well with nominations

i also think condon was second, which makes bassett's reaction so much more strange. like i know she won the first 2 precursors but neither of them had any overlap with actual academy voters so i think her "frontrunner" status was entirely false

Tbf no one nominated for a marvel movie should be shocked when they lose

How dare someone be disappointed when they lose an award

You can do it with sportsmanship and grace. Too bad it wasn't shown on that night.

You lot are overdramatic. There was no lack of sportsmanship or grace on display. You’re just upset she didn’t perform fake joy.

Yeah, I blame the critics for trying to make her happen and hyping her up more than the Academy for not awarding her.

That woman is delusional

Kerry Condon

I'm more shocked JLC was even first to begin with. However, I'd say something wild and pick Condom. Think there was more passion for Banshees and she could have won. Think the Academy wasn't going to award Basset for BP2.

I actually had Condon winning.

Yeah, I was like, 'when in doubt, go with BAFTA' and then BAFTA has zero overlap with Oscar that year.

You should have said that this year and you would have been right.

But this year I wasn't in doubt ;)

Angela would have only been a career win. It was not her best performance

Meanwhile I’ve always been baffled that people were surprised JLC got it. That seemed like such a lock to me it wasn’t even funny, a master class in absurdist acting, in what was the movie of the year, for an actor whose reputation in the industry is not only spotless in her own right but that of a double legacy to two genuine Hollywood legends. None of whom had won yet. It was beyond a sure thing

yes i agree i bragged about predicting that win as soon as eeaao came out, a year before the awards, even when she was losing all the precursors i still said shes going to win sag and then get it lol people thought i was crazy. she campaigned HARD too

The Oscar betting odds are shockingly correct over the past few years. For this category, there was a statistical three-way tie between Angela Bassett, Jamie, Lee Curtis, and Kerry Condon. Statistically the closest threeway tossup of any major category in years. But in any close race, the winner tends to be the easiest and nicest to work with during a long career. There is a reason that Burt Reynolds, Michael Keaton, and Sylvester Stallone failed to win despite being favorites. Oscar voters all work in the industry.

yes it was definitely a win based on jlc as a person and i am fine with that. for yrs i said whenever this woman is nominated shes winning on her first attempt. shes so well loved and i knew she would campaign the hell out of it, which she did

I think Angela Bassett came in 2nd. Everything I heard last year was that it was a dead heat between her and Jamie Lee.

Angela Bassett

Angela Bassett. She was the only good thing about Wakanda Forever

That's a little unfair... the end credits were equally good, not to mention a relief.

My personal pick would have been Stephanie Hsu, but I think Kerry Condon was in second since she won Bafta. I think Angela was in third because she didn’t win either of the industry awards.

Angela Bassett for a career role rather than a best performance type role

As opposed to Curtis?

probably bassett

Stephanie Hsu

Bassett should have won without a doubt. JLC’s win is one of the most absurd wins in the last decade. To answer the question I think Kerry Condon actually came in second she had the most Supporting actress esque performance.
