SUNSHINERS MEETING: The Quaker Springs Sunshiners will meet on Monday, May 13, at the Quaker Springs Firehouse. We will have some social time and a short business meeting at 11:30, followed by a covered dish luncheon. Folks should bring a dish to pass, their own table setting, and a memory to share about their early school experiences. Tim Lagoe and Pat Peck will present a program on the one room schools in the Town of Saratoga. Did you know that the first school was in Schuylerville before 1800? And the last one to close was the Wagman’s Ridge school – District No 2- that closed in June 1959 – one of the last one room schools in Saratoga County to close. Bring memories, photos, and artifacts to share.

PUBLIC TALK: Dr. Aaron Berman to speak on the history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The focus will be on the conflict as it existed before the events of October 7, 2023, discussing how the conflict between the two peoples attempting to share the same space came to this point.. The talk will take place on May 13, at the Methodist Church on Hemming Road, Saratoga Springs at 7:00 pm. All are welcome.

CAR SEAT CHECK: Cornell Cooperative Extension Saratoga County is hosting a car seat check at New Country Toyota of Clifton Park, 202 NY-146, Mechanicville from 4-8pm. With 90% of car seats installed incorrectly, plan to see us. We will have Nationally Certified Technicians and Instructors to educate you on the correct installation of your car seat and how to fit your child correctly in the seat. Appointments are required. CHILDREN’S HIKE: At Moreau Lake State Park, 10am. Join an educator on a fun and easy hike to look for things in nature that start with each letter of the alphabet! We will be writing things down if they can or they can help point things out. Geared toward 3-10 year olds, but everyone is welcome! The cost is $1 per child (cash or check). CANDIDATE FORUM: The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County will moderate a Meet the Candidates Forum for the Saratoga Springs School District on May 14 at 7 pm in the Saratoga Springs High School Teaching Auditorium. The forum will be live streamed on YouTube at https://youtube.com/live/1IVa7PvWia0. District residents will elect three individuals to the Board of Education for three-year terms in this year’s election. The candidates, in the order that they will appear on the ballot, are Matt Kopans, Connie Woytowich, Joe Sabanos, Amanda Ellithorpe, and Deb Amory. The League of Women Voters is encouraging the public to submit questions for the candidates to QuestionsLWVSC@gmail.com no later than Friday, May 10. Please put the name of the school district (“Saratoga Springs”) in the subject line for the event to which the questions are directed.

TRAIL HIKE: At Moreau Lake State Park, 2pm. Join an Educator on an easy 2.1-mile hike from Nature Trail to Mud Pond. We might just see some beaver lodges. Bring plenty of water, snacks, waterproof shoes, bug spray and appropriate clothing for the weather. The cost for the hike is

LIBRARY COMMITTEE MEETING: The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Galway Public Library will be held on Wednesday, May 15th at 6:30pm at the Galway Public Library, 2112 East Street, Galway. ASTRONOMY CLUB: The next meeting of the Astronomy Club of the Galway Public Library, 2112 East Street, Galway, will take place on May 15th at 6:30 pm. There will be a presentation on viewing summer constellations. This group meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, and is open to adults and teens (middle school and older). RIDE OF SILENCE: The Albany Bicycle Coalition will hold its annual “Ride of Silence for Bicyclists Killed & Seriously Injured in Crashes” on May 15. This is an event that bicycle groups around the world participate in. At 5 PM on Wednesday May 15, we will gather at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery to remember cyclist Joseph Crandall and the many other victims of traffic violence on Central Avenue, the deadliest road in the Capital Region. Location: 2150 Central Ave, Schenectady. At 6pm we will depart Evergreen for a 15.2 mile bike ride to visit sites where Roger Sawyer and Jeremy Williams lost their lives. The ride stays off Central Avenue, but riders should be comfortable riding with traffic. The ride will return to Evergreen before dark. Rain date May 22nd. BINGO: Knights of Columbus #246 hosts Bingo at the KOC Hall located at 50 Pine Rd. in Saratoga Springs, every Wednesday evening. The doors open at 4:30 pm, the kitchen window (which is staffed by the Catholic Daughters) opens at 5:30 pm, games go on sale at 6 pm., and the first game starts at 7 pm. Every week, there is $1,500 in guaranteed prize money. Join us for an evening out and help to support our activities within the community.

LIBRARY TALK: On Thursday, May 16th at 6 pm, the Galway Public Library, 2112 East St., Galway, will be hosting The Two-Fold Invasion: Never to Be the Same, a special talk by local citizen Geza Ginzery about his family’s experiences in Hungary before, during, and after World War II. This program is being presented in conjunction with our monthlong exhibit of Memories From Survivors: One Family’s Holocaust Legacy. MOVIE SCREENING: Recovery Advocacy in Saratoga (RAIS) will be showing the movie “The Anonymous People”, the movie that started the addiction recovery movement. STORYTELLER: Join Wilton Wildlife around the campfire on May 17 at 7:00 pm with a special guest presentation from Perry Ground, a master storyteller and cultural educator for traditional Haudenosaunee storytelling. Perry Ground is a Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. Perry has been a storyteller and educator for over 25 years and enjoys working with people of all ages to teach about the history & culture of Native Peoples. At this campfire chat, Perry will be telling “Stories from the People of the Longhouse,” a presentation filled with traditional legends that have been told for hundreds of years. These stories teach about the beliefs, customs, and history of the Haudenosaunee people. These stories become ‘interactive’ as Perry is known to include audience members in the stories. Elements of traditional Haudenosaunee lifestyle, pieces of historical information and LOTS of humor are woven into each story. Discussion about the Haudenosaunee culture and the art of storytelling is also part of this program. Not just for children, all listeners (young and old), will find this presentation captivating, highly entertaining yet very educational. S’mores and cocoa will be served starting at 6:30 pm with the presentation beginning promptly at 7:00 pm. Registration is required at least one day in advance. Space is limited. WIGGLY WANDERERS: At Moreau Lake State Park, 9:30am. Wiggly Wanderers is a casual and fun program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. We will not plan too much distance walking and we will rely on teachable moments to carry us through these experiences. Strollers will not work for these programs. While you do not need to attend each week, we will continue to build our toddlers hiking skills as well as their caregivers’ confidence taking the children into the woods to explore. HERITAGE HUNTERS MEETING: Heritage Hunters will meet Saturday May 18th at 1 pm, at the Town of Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St. in Schuylerville. Joseph W. Zarzynski, a maritime archaeologist from Wilton and a former Social Studies teacher in the Saratoga Springs School District, will be the speaker. He will tell the story of the 44 ft. long British warship that had been burned and then sank into Lake George during a 1757 French raid upon Fort William Henry. In 1903 it was raised and unceremoniously cut up for souvenirs. Zarzynski will examine its history, with photographs and the story of surviving and repurposed artifacts. Public is welcome. FAMILY HIKE: At Moreau Lake State Park, 9am. This program is meant for families with young kiddos. We will walk around the back pond and end at the playground…shhhhh don’t tell the kids! This hike is not stroller accessible but baby wearing and carrying will be very welcome. This hike is for all the members of the family so don’t leave older siblings or tiny babies behind! UNDERWATER ROBOTICS WORKSHOPS: The Galway Public Library, 2112 East Street, Galway, is hosting a workshop series for teens in middle school and older titled Underwater SeaPerch Robotics. SeaPerch is an international program that gives teens an opportunity to be part of a real-world engineering and design project to build an underwater ROV (robot). The third session will be held on May 18. The other sessions will be June 1 and June 15. Attendance at every session is not required. Please register by calling 518-882-6385.

CHURCH PLANT SALE AND BBQ: Quaker Springs United Methodist Church (466 Route 32 S, Schuylerville) invites all to our annual plant sale and chicken BBQ on May 18. “SPRING FLING”: Come join the Saratoga/Wilton Ladies Auxiliary BPOE#161 at our Spring Fling Cerebral Palsy Dance with the band Party of Three on May 18, 6-10pm at Saratoga/Wilton Elks Lodge. Admission is $25 per person which includes a buffet of BBQ chicken, ribs, baked beans, macaroni salad, cornbread and dessert. Dress is casual. You’ll want to “shake a leg,” or tap your feet to the vocals and beat of our musical trio. Raffle baskets for every day of the week are being created. PAINTING WORKSHOP: If you want to be outside, get some pointers from an artist, and combine your love of art and nature, this is the workshop for you! There will be four painting workshops offered by Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park at Camp Saratoga in the town of Wilton. The workshops are scheduled to enjoy the display of beautiful wildflowers in the meadow, such as the wild blue lupine. There will be two workshops for watercolor paints and two for acrylic paints. The acrylic workshops are scheduled for Sunday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 21 both from 12:00pm to 3:00pm with local artist Page Darrow. This program is appropriate for participants older than 13. ANIMAL MEET & GREET: At Moreau Lake State Park, noon. This program is new and will include a little meet and greet with each animal in the nature center. Afterwards we will work together to guess the weight of each animal and put them in order according to our guesses. We will use some weighted items to help us make guesses and have some fun in the process. This program is ideal for kids 7+ but siblings are welcome to join. CHARITY BIKE/WALK: The twentieth annual Team Billy Ride and Walk for Research will take place on Sunday, May 19 at the Farmers’ Market at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga Springs. Three rides of 50, 25 and 10 miles will begin at 8:30 am, with a three mile walk through the historic district starting at 9:00 a.m. The rides follow some of the most beautiful sections of Saratoga County, with the 50 mile bike ride through the Saratoga National Historic Park. This local event and ongoing donations have made possible over $2,900,000 in research grants
for brain tumor research. All donations are tax deductible and made payable to the National

FILM DISCUSSION: Saratoga Jewish Community Arts and the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York present a panel discussion of the documentary “Four Seasons Lodge” on May 19 at 7 pm on Zoom. The 2008 film grew out of a series of articles by Andrew Jacobs, a reporter for The New York Times and a novice director who was imaginative enough to enlist the help of the outstanding cinematographer Albert Maysles. While the film is labeled a Holocaust documentary, it is not your typical Shoah story. On the surface, the plot revolves around a group of people who survived the death camps and now are struggling to save their summer camp in the Catskills. “Four Seasons Lodge” is available free to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Kanopy (registration with library card required). FUNDRAISING GALA: Home Made Theater will hold its annual Spring Gala on Sunday, May 19th at The Mansion of Saratoga on Route 29 in Rock City Falls. This year’s theme is “Come to the Garden,” in honor of Home Made Theater’s upcoming June production of the musical The Secret Garden, being performed at the Pitney Meadows Community Farm on West Avenue in Saratoga Springs. Starting at 11:30AM, the gala will feature a full brunch menu of American and French favorites prepared by The Mansion of Saratoga’s Chef Rick Bieber. Entertainment for the event will feature performances from the upcoming production of The Secret Garden, as well as raffles, silent auction items, and other activities. A “Garden Guest” ticket is $125 and includes coffee or tea, juice, iced tea, lemonade, and one complimentary cocktail. There will also be a cash bar. An “Honorary Committee” ticket, which is $200, also includes program recognition, VIP seating for the entertainment, and a special gift bag. WALK ‘N’ ROLL: The Spina Bifida Association of New York State (SBANYS) is holding the 14th annual Walk-N-Roll in Central Park, Schenectady. The event will kick off with participant check-in from 10:30am-11:00am, followed by the Walk-N-Roll at 11:30am. The route is fully accessible, ensuring that everyone can participate, whether walking or rolling. Registration is free, and we encourage teams to sign up, fundraise and show their spirit through coordinated outfits or signs. For those who cannot attend in person, the Virtual Walk-N-Roll option allows participants to join the effort from anywhere from 5/17-5/19. OIL PAINTING DEMONSTRATION: The Southern Saratoga Art Society will host a free Oil Painting and Composition demonstration by artist Lisa David at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 20th at the Clifton Park Senior Community Center, 6 Clifton Common Blvd. Lisa frequently revisits playful vintage subjects with a realistic approach and a strong use of color. Saratoga Arts made this program possible through the Community Arts Regrant Program, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. NATURE ON THE MOVE: On Mondays May 6 and 20 at 10:30 am, Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be holding its bi-weekly Nature on the Move walks. These walks are led by one of Wilton Wildlife’s Environmental Educators and will take place at NYS DEC’s Camp Saratoga on May 20. These walks give participants an opportunity to get out on the trails with like-minded people and observe the beauty of nature in the spring. They are geared towards gentle exercise and are appropriate for adults at basic fitness levels. The group usually covers about 1.5 miles of trail. Nature on the Move happens every other week, year-round. Registration is required at least one business day in advance. SECRET LIFE OF SNAKES: At Moreau Lake State Park, 10am. Come to the Nature Center to learn about our resident snakes. Some people have misconceptions around snakes but we will put those concerns and myths to rest while talking about all the cool things snakes offer the world. After the class we will go for a short walk and see if we can find any snakes out in the wild. (hike will be weather permitting). This program requires 24 advance sign up and will cost $1 per child. SARATOGA SPRINGS CITY COUNCIL MEETING: Saratoga Springs City Council meetings are regularly scheduled for 7 pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 474 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. The workshops are scheduled to enjoy the display of beautiful wildflowers in the meadow, such as the wild blue lupine. There will be two workshops for watercolor paints and two for acrylic paints. The acrylic workshops are scheduled for Sunday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 21 both from 12:00pm to 3:00pm with local artist Page Darrow. This program is appropriate for participants older than 13. WIGGLY WANDERERS: At Moreau Lake State Park, 9:30am. Wiggly Wanderers is a casual and fun program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. We will not plan too much distance walking and we will rely on teachable moments to carry us through these experiences. Strollers will not work for these programs. While you do not need to attend each week, we will continue to build our toddlers hiking skills as well as their caregivers’ confidence taking the children into the woods to explore. POLLINATOR PALOOZA: Sustainable Saratoga is hosting Pollinator Palooza, a native plant sale and pollinator education event, on Saturday, June 1 from 10am-3pm at 390 Wilton-Gansevoort Rd, Gansevoort. Native pollinators (bees, butterflies, etc.) are in drastic decline due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change. Planting native plants provides essential food and habitat for native pollinators. It is often challenging to find native plants, but at Pollinator Palooza, you can shop our selection of over 35 native plant species. Please Note, cash or check preferred. Make a day of it! Learn how your garden, no matter how small, can help pollinators. WILDLIFE FESTIVAL: Wilton Wildlife will be hosting its Annual Wildlife Festival at the Historic Camp Saratoga on Scout Road in Wilton from 11am to 3pm. The free event will feature Karner blue butterfly information, lupine planting, food trucks, live animals, nature crafts, face painting, pond exploration, and hands-on fun. The event is timed to enjoy the beauty of the first brood of Karner blue butterflies and the blooming wild blue lupine. Activities will take place throughout Camp Saratoga to encourage people to explore the wonderful trail system, since the Wildlife Festival is a registered National Trails Day event. During the festival, native raptors will be presented by the Trish Marki of Silent Wings, sponsored by Ballston Spa National Bank. There will be live turtles at the turtle discovery table. At noon there will be an award ceremony for the winners of the Annual Earth Day Essay Contest. Entries were received from schools from all over the region and even beyond New York State! At the ceremony, the contest winners from each of the categories will receive their $50 cash prize. There will be lupine planting and a Karner blue butterfly information table to help visitors learn about the Saratoga Sand Plains Habitat Restoration area. Educators from Wilton Wildlife will share information about the efforts that New York State DEC and The Nature Conservancy have made in improving and increasing the habitat for this endangered species. Beginning at 11:00 am there will be numerous craft activities taking place in locations around Camp Saratoga. These will include clay medallions, fish printing, and watercolor painting. At the pond, volunteers will be on hand with dip nets to help people discover the animals that live there. The Donald A. Collins Memorial Fire Observer’s Cabin will be open along with the Historic Cornell Hill Fire Tower for visitors to get a unique view. Many other local organizations will have tables at the festival, including parks and nonprofits. This year food will be available from Big-n-Cheesy and Rolling in Gravy food trucks and Wilton Wildlife volunteers will be selling homemade goods through a bake sale. The Wildlife Festival will take place rain or shine with many of the activities moving under cover of Camp Saratoga’s many pavilions, the dining hall and the Winter Lodge in case of rainy weather. We encourage people to carpool, bike, blade, walk, or share rides with others since parking is limited. BARRE PARTY: The Town of Greenfield is holding a “TOG (Town Of Greenfield) Barre-ty Party” for ladies on June 9 from 4 pm to 5:30 pm at Pure Barre, at 56 Marion Ave. Registration links can be found at www.greenfieldny.org to reserve a spot. SUNSET YOGA: The Town of Greenfield Recreation Department is adding exercise classes for its residents. The town is sponsoring outdoor “Sunset Yoga” at its Middle Grove Park, 428 Middle Grove Rd. Sunset Yoga is open to adults and costs $10 per person. Participants should dress warm, bring a blanket and a yoga mat. The program will be from 7-8 pm on May 21, June 6, June 13, June 20, and June 27.

HORSEMAN’S SOCIAL: CCE Equine’s annual Horseman’s Social is moving to greener pastures this year. The 2024 Horsemen’s Social, presented by CCE Equine and hosted by Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga, is set to take place on June 13, 2024, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. This event will be held at the Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga facility located at 683 RT-29, Saratoga Springs. CAMPFIRE CHAT: At Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park. Scheduled for the second Friday of each month at 7:00 pm, this program gathers participants around the campfire for a chat and discussion of local animal species and what is being done to support these populations.
