Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are ushering in the summer movie season with a bang with The Fall Guy, an action comedy blockbuster based on the hit series of the same name starring Lee Majors as a stuntman/bounty hunter.
The series, which ran on ABC for five seasons from 1981-86, had an evolving storyline, so it completely seems within reason that the movie version of The Fall Guy could keep going with a sequel. Of course, the greatest indicator that another Fall Guy movie could be waiting in the wings is if the movie includes an end credits scene.
In theaters for Thursday night previews before opening nationwide Friday, The Fall Guy — like the series — features a stuntman named Colt Seavers. Gosling assumes the Seavers role for the movie, a trusty, veteran stuntman for megawatt action movie star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).
Colt generally has better ways to spend his time on set, though, since he’s dating Jody Moreno (Blunt), a camera operator who often works on Tom’s movies. Colt’s seemingly perfect world changes in an instant, though, with a near-fatal set accident that convinces him to leave the movie business — as well as Jody — behind.
After spending 18 months away from a movie set while earning a paltry living as a Hollywood valet, Colt gets a call from Tom’s movie producer, Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) to do stunts for the star’s latest production, which is filming in Australia.
Colt has a good incentive to return to the business since he’s still in love with Jody, who happens to be the director of Tom’s latest movie, the sci-fi action epic Metalstorm. The stuntman, however, learns quickly though, that Jody is not so easy to forgive him.
Colt also learns upon his return that Gail needs him to find Tom, who has gone missing from the set and is in the company of some very scary people. What Colt doesn’t realize, though, is that there’s a bigger conspiracy surrounding the production that even the most experienced of stuntmen will have a hard time surviving.
Note: Spoilers for the film are discussed in the next section.
How Do The End Credits For ‘The Fall Guy’ Play Out?
Since this is a blockbuster summer popcorn movie, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that yes, there are sequences during the end credits of The Fall Guy.
The first sequence — which isn’t part of the narrative but instead serves as a way for director and former stuntman David Leitch to honor the stunt community — shows The Fall Guy’s real stunt performers in action while making the movie.
The entertaining footage plays out on the left side of the screen while the film’s credits roll on the right, as Leitch properly honors dozens if not hundreds behind-the-scenes crew members working on stunts and other key elements of The Fall Guy.
In a way, the extended sequence lifts the veil on how the film’s most amazing stunts were achieved. As such, it’s fascinating to watch because it makes you realize just how incredibly dangerous stunt work on a film can be. It even reveals that a crucial car jump scene in the film isn’t the work of CGI, but is indeed a frightening stunt that could end very badly if not executed properly.
After that, The Fall Guy rolls into a narrative end credits scene, which serves more as a way to honor a pair of principal actors in The Fall Guy series than it is a cliffhanger that could lead to a sequel.
The fact that a scene like this exists in The Fall Guy shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, but the details of it won’t be spoiled here because it serves as a perfect way to punctuate the wildly entertaining events of the film.
Also starring Winston Duke, Stephanie Hsu and Teresa Palmer, The Fall Guy opens in Thursday night previews before expanding to theaters nationwide on Friday.
