CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --The Virginia Tech Hokies fell 10-9 in a 13-inning marathon matchup to the No. 18 Virginia Cavaliers Saturday.

Senior David Shoemaker (3-4) took the loss on the mound for Virginia Tech (32-20, 14-16). Senior Matthew Siverling was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking none and striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning.

The Cavaliers failed to push any runs across before the Hokies offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Virginia Tech offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of senior Eddie Micheletti, which brought the Hokies lead to 7-0.

Virginia fired back to even the ballgame at seven before Virginia Tech reclaimed an 8-7 advantage in the eighth inning. The Hokies scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Clay Grady.

The Cavaliers then evened up the game at eight before Virginia Tech fought back to retake their advantage in the thirteenth inning. Junior Carson DeMartini crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Hokies, bringing the score to 9-8 in favor of Virginia Tech. The Hokies were unable to hold the lead, as Virginia scored two times in the bottom half of the thirteenth to grab the 10-9 win.
