Last weekend saw the start of British Airways flights from Southampton Airport for the summer season.

I thought this was a good excuse to take a look at the routes that BA Cityflyer will be operating from Southampton this year.

If you’ve never been to Southampton Airport, it has its own railway station – which is about 100m from the terminal – and can be reached on direct trains from London Waterloo in just over an hour.

There will be four routes flown by British Airways this summer:

  • Bergerac (Saturday flights out, already operating)
  • Palma de Mallorca (Sunday flights out, already operating)
  • Faro (Saturday flights out, starts 25th May)
  • Malaga (Sunday flights out, starts 26th May)

What does British Airways offer from Southampton?

The routes are all operated by BA Cityflyer, a separate British Airways subsidiary.

It operates a fleet of Embraer E190 aircraft. These are smaller planes that are able to take off and land from London City’s short runways. When London City is closed over the weekend, some of the aircraft are moved to Southampton to operate these leisure routes.

The E190s feature 2-2 seating (image below) in both business class (Club Europe) and economy (Euro Traveller):

A densification programme is about to begin which will reduce the currently generous 33″ pitch from row 12 and add eight more seats (two rows) to each aircraft.

Service on board differs to British Airways flights from Heathrow and Gatwick. Economy passengers are offered a snack and a soft / alcoholic / hot drink, just like the old days on Heathrow and Gatwick services. Club Europe passengers receive the same service as they would on a mainline flight, albeit from a different catering company to Heathrow flights.

    Did the SOU-DUB route a few times when they had it. It’s an excellent airport to use and lounge is brilliant. Smallish but the service was very good.

    Southampton has the most woeful customer experience – a couple of overpriced shops, a range of vending machines and that’s your lot..

      I have been using Southampton airport for years and have watched it’s demise in hospitality. I flew to Jersey on 8th of May this year. No bar facilities even though there is now a bar. No facilities for a meal and bar air side is unaffordable. Just greedy. I take a sandwich now

    Comments about the runway being too small for bigger aircraft are incorrect. They extended the runway last year and it can now handle B737 / A320.

          I don’t see any other carriers rushing down to SOU, they decided Bournemouth was far more accommodating, so much for extending the runway.

          I think the article may be referring to the runway at LCY.

    BA Cityflyer must have their reasons for flying to such staid destinations. They look very previous century compared to the new routes from London Southend announced by easyJet – Enfidha, Antalya, Dalaman, Marrakech, Pisa and Gran Canaria. Either BA’s customer base is ‘very previous century’ or have never travelled before, i.e. ‘current century’.

      Their E190s can’t fly to those longer sector easyJet destinations listed apart from Pisa. They do fly to Florence. There are non-staid parts of Mallorca, Dordogne, Algarve, Andalucia.

    We used the Palma service on Sunday and the flight was probably 75% full. Very convenient to get to Southampton but security was a bit chaotic, we were the first flight out and I hate to think what it would be like with more flights to service. The lounge was good although like security the service was a little offbeat. All in all though a much better experience than flying from Bournemouth which though closer for me is a pain to get to.

    The problem with SOU is that the flights simply aren’t competitively priced.

    It’s only an additional 40min drive across the Forest to BOH or 50min up the M3 to LHR, and I can save a fortune when taking my family on holiday.

    For short hops over to the Channel Islands SOU is fine, but I don’t see the runway extension making much difference until they drop the prices.
