Things to do around Campbell River this long weekend?

❓Question/Discussion

Hey all!

I hope you are all doing well.

I am visiting the island (coming from the Okanagan) this may long weekend to visit my dad, and I was just wondering what are some things to do in and around Campbell River?!

I’m picking my dad up from Duncan and then we’re heading up to Campbell River for a few nights as he wanted to explore the area. I definitely wouldn’t mind doing some nice scenic walks, but the only thing is my dad has quite a bit of knee issues and it quite limited. Are there any nice easy, not very long walk paths? Something along the ocean or a forest would be super nice.

I have a car and am totally up for whatever yall recommend! I just want to have our days busy so we’re not bored sitting around the hotel like “hmmmm… what to do”. I wanted to maybe try and go to Strathcona Park and just take a look. My dad loves exploring the back-roads but I don’t want to ding my car up haha. It doesn’t have to be anything nature related, it could maybe be a cool shop or area to explore too! Anything to keep busy haha.

I use to spend the summers out on the island with my dad and I’m pretty familiar with Nanaimo up to Victoria, but not more north island so I’m pretty excited to check it out. I’d appreciate if there are any restaurants y’all rave about!

Side note, is there a really good restaurant to watch the Canucks game tomorrow? Also maybe a stupid question, is there anywhere we could try and see whales off the coast? I don’t know if I want to do a tour but I’d love to try and see some.

Thanks all!

air show down in Comox saturday.

The sea-walk is an easy stroll beside the ocean!

You could drive through Strathcona and have lunch in Gold River, it’s about an hour and 10 minutes. I recommend Sea + Field Bistro. There are viewpoints of the lake you can stop at along the way.

Depending on how many stairs your dad's knees can handle, elk falls is a beautiful walk. Some gentle hills down to the stairs that take you to the suspension bridge and view area. Even if you can't make it down the stairs you can still see the top of the falls, and you should be able to explore a few more of the trails along the top of the ridge too. Plenty of old growth trees there accessable without doing the steep paths down to the river. Beaver lodge lands also have lots of trails in them. A nice flat one that's not too long is the beaver pond trail, with a small parking lot on mcpederan road. There is a small wash out right now, about 6 ft wide and 3 ft deep, but it's manageable to get through.

For wooded, the Beaver Lodge Lands are a very flat and easy walking. For ocean, the Seawalk in Willow Point is very nice. You could even stop at Fogg Duckers for a coffee and enjoy the ocean view.

A little bit south, the Oyster River trails are mild and scenic beside the river and ocean, and you can choose from a couple different paths so the way back can be a change of scenery.

Saratoga Speedway is having its Monster Truck show on Saturday if that’s up your alley.

Best place to watch the hockey isn’t overly unique, but the casino restaraunt, match.

Best place for a limited small walk is elk falls and then go a few kms further up the road and check out mcivor lake. Beautiful lake to chill and have a drink if that’s something you’d like to do. Sea walk like others have said with a stop off at fogg dukkers also nice.

Best pizza in town in fratellis and it’s really good and then there is also, fifty parallel which is pretty good and has great views. Riptide pub is another decent spot and you could watch the game there too if you don’t mind sitting at bar, but tvs limited otherwise. Session a cool little spot, but no tvs.

The Comox airshow (30-40 minutes South of CR) is on for Saturday (tomorrow) - first time in 9 years! It's free - gates open at 0800, I think - there's info online.
