Police ID man who fired shots in Madison County Amazon facility as security guard

A motive is unclear at this time.

WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio — The West Jefferson Police Department identified the suspect who authorities say fired a weapon at an Amazon fulfillment center in Madison County on Sunday.

Police on Monday said Hamsa Yusuf Ali fired a semiautomatic handgun from within the facility on state Route 29, but a motive for doing so is unclear at this time. He was shot and killed during a later encounter and shootout with Columbus police where an officer was also injured.

Amazon says Ali, a security guard, was a contractor assigned to work at the facility by a third-party partner.

West Jefferson police were called to the Amazon CMH5 Fulfillment Center Sunday evening after receiving multiple reports of an active shooter. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and other nearby law enforcement agencies were called to assist with the scene.

Police said at least one shot was from within the building and left the area before officers arrived. The facility was cleared and there were no reported injuries.

“We’re thankful that no one at our facility was injured during this incident and for the work of our team on the ground and first responders,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement.

The Columbus Division of Police was requested to assist with the shots fired situation at the Amazon fulfillment center and found Ali at Georgesville and Clime roads on the city's west side.

The encounter led to an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and responding officers, according to Columbus police. Two outside agencies responded to the encounter as well.

A Columbus police officer was struck during the exchange and their vest caught the bullet, according to Columbus Fraternal Order of Police President Brian Steel. Ali was struck by gunfire as well, police said.

The officer who was shot was taken to Grant Medical Center and their condition was described as stable. Their name has not been released, but Steel said the officer was released from the hospital and is expected to be OK.

The suspect was transported to Doctors West Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:57 p.m.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been requested to investigate the shooting.
