WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Republicans are moving forward with legislation that would force the White House to send military aid to Israel.

The push comes after the Biden administration threatened to hold certain weapons transfer out of concern Israel will invade Rafah, a densely populated city in Gaza.

“Siding with Hamas, we’re not going to let that happen,” said Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.).

Last week the president confirmed his administration already paused a bombs shipment.

“The cost of this decision is dangerous,” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas.).

At a hearing Tuesday, McCaul argued the president is turning his back on a U.S. ally.

“Israel is in a fight for its life against a terrorist organization, Rafah is the final key military objective,” said McCaul.

New York Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks says Republicans are intentionally blowing things out of proportion.

“This impact has no impact on iron dome interceptions,” Meeks said.

He says the president is making a moral call.

“The bombs in question can create a crater 50 feet wide and 36 feet deep have no place in urban combat,” he added.

Not every Democrat is running to the president’s defense, in fact, some are expected to vote in favor of the Republican bill.

In a letter to the White House last week 26 House Democrats said they were deeply concerned about the weapon holds.

“There are different perspectives about how our party views this, but overwhelming House Democrats will reject this,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.).

House Democratic leadership is brushing off concerns the vote could fracture party unity.

The White House is already promising to veto the bill.
