The Casualty cast made their feelings known about the future of the medical drama.

The best soap category was a three horse race between ITV’s Emmerdale and the BBC’s EastEnders and Casualty, with the latter being crowned the much-deserved winner.

After claiming the trophy on stage, the soap stars explained why Casualty should stay following the axe of Holby City and Doctors.

Speaking to press in the BAFTA winners’ room, Elinor Lawles (Dr Stevie Nash) said: ‘There’s been a lot of actors who’ve cut their teeth on Casualty.

‘You’ve got the likes of Jodie Comer, Tom Hiddleston, Kate Winslet, Daisy Ridley.

‘It’s one of those shows that for a lot of actors – definitely for me, it was my first experience of being on a TV set.’

Producer Jon Sen added: ‘I think that’s what is often overlooked, the brilliant high end drama of tomorrow rests and relies on the vibrant, continuing drama of today.

‘And we need to give it the attention and the credit and the funding that it needs in order to provide the drama industry with the start of tomorrow.’

This comes after Casualty icon Derek Thompson’s character Charlie Fairhead left Holby ED after 38 years.

In an exit storyline that spanned over two episodes, Charlie’s life was put in jeopardy after being stabbed by a patient.

As Charlie’s friends looked after him in resus, we were treated to flashback scenes of the beloved character working as a nurse early on in his career.

Back in the hospital, after Charlie recovered, he told Stevie Nash that he was going to retire.
