EARLY LIFE
- Suresh Kumar Raina was born to parents Shri Trilokchand Raina and Smt. Parvesh Raina on November 27, 1986, in Muradnagar Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. He was born and raised in a military background, as his father was a former military officer. Suresh Raina’s father is a Kashmiri Pandit, but they left the village of Rainawari after the killings of Kashmir Pandits in the 1990s.
- At the age of 14, Suresh Raina already showed commitment and determination in playing cricket. However, they could not afford the coaching fees for cricket. He had a trial at Guru Gobind Singh Sports College, where the fees were Rs 5000 a year, which his family could afford. He then moved to Lucknow to study and play cricket. In 2002, at the age of 15, he became the captain of the Uttar Pradesh U-16 team and was noticed by Indian selectors. He was selected to be part of the U-19 team for England.
DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- As part of the U-19 team, Suresh Raina was able to make a couple of half-centuries. In February 2003, he made his Ranji Trophy debut for Uttar Pradesh against Assam. In the latter part of 2003, he played for the U-19 team against Pakistan in the U-19 Asian One Day International (ODI) Championship. In 2004, Suresh Raina was selected for the U-19 World Cup, where he scored three half-centuries. Due to his notable performance and great form, he was given the Border-Gavaskar scholarship, which allowed him to train at the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide.
- In 2005, Suresh Raina made his ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka. Despite having potential, he was not able to show it in his performance. At the end of 2006, he was dropped from the ODI team.
- Suresh Raina has experience in all formats of cricket, but he showed exceptional skill and talent in the T20 format. He made his T20I debut in December 2006 against South Africa. He was then selected by Chennai Super Kings and he played for the team since the 2008 Indian Premier League.
- His exceptional performance in the T20 format was noticed by the national team and he was called to play for India in the 2008 Asia Cup. His performance cemented his place in the team. However, Suresh Raina settled for the lower order as the team already had a heavy top and middle order.
- Due to his stellar performance in the ODI format for the national team, he was called to the Indian Test team. His debut match was against Sri Lanka in July 2010 where he scored a century. However, he struggled against pace and swing, which caused his form to dip. Eventually, he was dropped from the Indian Test team.
- Suresh Raina proved his ability and worth in the ODI and T20 formats of cricket. He greatly contributed to India’s win against Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup. He has also earned praise for his performance against Sri Lanka in 2012 and England in 2013. However, in 2013, in the series against West Indies, he failed to bat well but compensated with his fielding and bowling. He was able to secure a spot for India for the South Africa and New Zealand tours but his poor performance led to him being dropped from the team.
- In contrast to his inconsistent performance in international matches, Suresh Raina is nicknamed “Mr. IPL” for his consistency and domination in the Indian Premier League. He has greatly contributed to the success of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. His performance in the IPL allowed him to play for the Indian team once again, but eventually, he was dropped due to poor performance.
- During the two-year exile of CSK from the IPL, Suresh Raina captained the Gujarat Lions and was eventually snapped by the team in an auction in 2016. In 2018, he went back to CSK, and in 2020, he retired from all forms of international cricket.
ACHIEVEMENTS & LEGACY
- In 2010, Suresh Raina captained India’s team on its tour to Zimbabwe, making him the second-youngest player to be captain. He also served as captain of India in 2014, where he received praise for his captaincy skills.
- At the age of 24, Suresh Raina became the first Indian to score a century in T20I.
- Suresh Raina holds the record for the most number of catches and is also the first-ever to reach 5000 runs in IPL.
- In the Champions League T20, he holds the records for the most runs and fifties, the second-most sixes, the fourth-highest scorer, and the fifth-most catches.
- He married his childhood friend, Priyanka Chaudhary, on April 3, 2015. They have a daughter, Gracia, and a son named Rio. They launched a non-profit organization, the Gracia Raina Foundation, on their daughter’s first birthday. The foundation aims to promote the well-being of underprivileged mothers and their children.
