She doesn’t have social media, so communicates through her roommate’s account when she finds necessary

Cliffs:

- She was a court watcher in PG County for 2.5 years, saw so many women going through it and being held pre-trial for inordinate amounts of time for basic BS. Women who thought they’d be out quickly and didn’t even think to put money on their books, meanwhile their whole lives fall apart: jobs, housing, and kids all taken.

- She volunteers with Life After Release which is partnering with Harriet’s Wildest Dreams and Out for Justice on “Free Black Mamas DMV.” It provides “wraparound care” for these women, which not only includes freeing them, but also helping them get jobs, housing, legal assistance, Ubers to medical appointments giving them phones, clothing, toiletries. The things one might be able to count on from family.

- Says there’s so much going in the world that you can’t do anything about, but this is a space where you can make a difference.

- Says if you can give something, please do, if you can’t that’s okay. Maybe pass on the link, look into the organizations and cause. You could volunteer, become a court watcher, point them to other women who need help. lots of ways to help

Free Black Mamas DMV

“The only weapon we have is our bodies and we need to tuck them in places so wheels don’t turn.” -Bayard Rustin

Story
#FreeBlackMamasDMV is a collective of organizations including Harriet's Wildest Dreams, Life After Release, and many others organizing an annual Free Black Mama’s Day. These bailouts and post release wrap around services across the DC and Baltimore metro areas have taken place since 2017 to raise the advocacy and amplification of dismantling, pre-trial detention and to end these systemic injustices that keep our people caged once and for all.

“We are our ancestors wildest dreams.”

#FreeBlackMamasDMV began as an answer for the call to action from Southerners on New Ground’s (SONG) in 2017 to bail out Black mamas and caretakers to raise public consciousness about the inhumanity of money bail.

Since our collective 2017 inception, we have:

  • Bailed out over 50+ community loved ones and counting;
  • Provided access and pathways to addressing social determinants of health including transitional housing, clothing, transportation and cell phones to mamas and caretakers we’ve bailed out.
  • Launched an eight (8) week paid fellowship at the Liberation and Justice Institute.
  • For the past six consecutive years, we've provided emergency assistance for mamas and caretakers bailed out through #FreeBlackMamasDMV in collaborative conjunction with other local organizers.
#FreeBlackMamasDMV is a member of National Bail Out Collective’s #FreeBlackMamas campaign, a formation of over a dozen community based organizations that is responsible for the Black Mama’s Bail Out along with subsequent bail out actions and strategies to end money bail and pretrial detention.

I know it’s her personal choice to disregard social media, but this would reach so many more people if it was her own account with a check mark. She’s doesn’t even have to be active on the account, just hand it off to a social media manger, or leave it until you need to log on.

But, this amazing of her to advocate for people no one are listening to, her fans only use her to feel deep while ignoring stuff like this. Black celebs from the DMV should stand behind this initiative as well, at least a repost.

Industry shenanigans (label purposely sitting on years of material she recorded and submitted because she stood firm in not wanting to become a cog in the pop machine) and personal issues (ED and alleged drug addiction relapse).

I love her so so much. She's a transcendent artist and person.

She also gave her royalties for 'Criminal' to Raices for two years in 2019 when it was famously featured in Hustlers.

Fiona Apple has announced that she'll donate royalties from her biggest hit "Criminal" (off 1996's Tidal) to the While They Wait fund, a joint effort coordinated by Brooklyn Defender Services and RAICES to legally assist immigrants seeking asylum. "After months and months of reading the news about how my country is treating refugees, I've become gutted with frustration trying to figure out the best way to help," Apple wrote. "What they need is representation and guidance because these people are being prosecuted as criminals just for asking for asylum... I have decided to pledge all of my earnings from 'Criminal' over this year and next to [While They Wait]."

And she pledged $50,000 to The Harlem Children's Zone and Seeding Sovereignty if her royalties from 'Shameika' wouldn't cover that.

She won her second Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2021 and stayed at home to be a court watcher.

She is the definition of drinking my water minding my biz.

That was impressive. Fiona Apple has a roommate? I assume it is for the company more than financial need. Anyway, that was very cool of her. She has always been her own person but I never thought she would be somebody who noticed how unjust the "justice" system actually is

She went through a lot, she was raped outside her apartment when she was 14 and she had an eating disorder for years and years.
Her brother and her friends live with her and her band comes to her house to record. She doesn't go outside that much anymore.

This is so random, I was just thinking about Fiona Apple yesterday. Does she still make music?

I’m not mad at this though!

Yea, she's just not very prolific. Only 5 albums in 28 years.

I remember when she used to be everywhere and disappeared all of a sudden. I wondered what really happened BTS tbh.

She probably preferred taking care of her mental health and creating on her own timetable rather than playing industry games to keep up with celebrity.

This video tells you all you need to know.

after she got up there on MTV's cameras in 1997 and sh!t on the industry/media, it was a wrap. Promotion of her music in mainstream was very minimal after that. She was almost dropped from her label after her second album underperformed despite it getting rave reviews, but her core loyal fans sent bushels of apples to her record label's office in support of her and changed their minds about it. She's kind of an indie darling now.

It is impressive that she is actively volunteering. It is a really good way to channel your energy when you have achieved a lot and don't need to work for money. Many of these celebs and influencers could learn a thing or two instead of always trying to sell us stuff.

This world is bullshït. Good for her, for helping people who are out here dealing with some of the worst of it.

Go Fiona, I know she had to bow out* it the industry due to corruption but I’m proud that she’s still doing community work/advocacy.

This is great….I respect her for this..this how you do the work..You don’t publicize it to make it about you. You get in the trenches and do the work and come to ask for the help for others and not making it about you.

I really respect her for this. There are many celebrities and influencers that could take a leaf out of her book. Not just posting squares and being performative. Actually trying to take action for good. Good for her!
