‘No One Cares Anymore’: The Mandalorian’s Bill Burr Says Cancel Culture Is Over

The subject of “cancel culture” and how it has affected comedy in particular has been a hot debate for several years. However, Bill Burr feels like that era is finished, admitting he puts no thought anymore into whether he’ll face backlash for his controversial comedy.

Burr, who’s appeared in TV shows like Breaking Bad and The Mandaloriandiscussed the subject during a new interview for the Club Random podcast with Bill Maher. The two first discussed how Louis CK returned to performing stand-up and even made a new movie after his major scandal during the MeToo era. Both Maher and Burr agreed that Louis CK has been sufficiently “punished” by this point and don’t take issue with the actor and comedian getting his career back on track.

“Isn’t it time everyone just went, ‘Okay. It wasn’t a cool thing to do, but it’s been long enough, and welcome back to the world,'” Maher said.

Burr noted, “They took $50 million from him. I think they punished him.”

“Enough! I mean, for Christ’s sake, it’s not the end of the world,” Maher continued. “People have done so much more worse things and gotten less. There’s no rhyme or reason to the MeToo-type punishments.”

From there, Burr shared his new viewpoint on the phenomenon dubbed as cancel culture. He said that it might have begun with good intentions but that it took a turn for the worse once stand-up comedy started getting so heavily scrutinized. Burr suggested that most people don’t really care enough about it at this point, sharing that he no longer spends anytime thinking about how offensive his material might be, convinced that he won’t ultimately be canceled over jokes.

“Whenever that cancel culture got to the point where it was, ‘I don’t like some of the topics in your stand-up act,’ yeah, that’s when it got weird.”

“Well, it’s like most things,” Burr said. “It started off with something everyone could agree on, and then quickly it just spun out of control. Whenever that cancel culture got to the point where it was, ‘I don’t like some of the topics in your stand-up act,’ yeah, that’s when it got weird. But, that’s all over.”

While Maher disagreed that cancel culture was finished, Burr retorted, “Yeah, no one cares anymore… Well, if you’re not doing anything. If it’s just like, ‘You did this joke about, you know, this group of people, or that group of people, and I’ve decided…’ I don’t know. I feel like I’m going back two years in my life. I don’t even think about it anymore.”

Bill Burr Isn’t Worried About Cancel Culture

Burr happened to be featured in The Mandalorian with Gina Carano, another actor who is also known to be associated with the cancel culture phenomenon. Disney and Lucasfilm famously cut ties with Carano based on some of her social media posts, later leading to a lawsuit that was recently filed for discrimination. Burr has publicly defended Carano on multiple occasions after the incident, arguing that she never should have been cut loose from The Mandalorian.
