Entry into the game after original core box

I snagged a original core box ultra cheap. It is just sitting on my shelf for now, but I really want to get into this game casually. I have a fair amount of store credit at my FLGS. I am looking for recommendations how to spend ~$125 going forward.

I really like X-men, the Hulk, and Daredevil. Less interested in painting other things. What would be some packs to get to have some fun teams to get my partner and friends playing the game with me. They are all super board game literate and alot of 40k players so I think they would love a break with a smaller scale game. I have other games to try hard on so I am looking to have alot of fun with this one and paint some different minis than grimdark.

If your recommendations are over $125 that is fine that is just the store credit burning a hole in my pocket.

Definitely check out the X-Men affiliation pack. Cyclops and Storm are both solid leader units. Past that, Crisis Protocol is a pretty balanced game so if you pick up characters you like, your probably not going to go wrong. I would look at the affiliations list on the AMG website just to make sure the characters you buy are connected to the team you want to play.

Awesome, are the Magneto and Wolverine in these packs the same rules as their smaller packs?

Yes - there are 2 versions of Wolverine (and soon to be a third version) but the one in the affiliation pack is the same one that comes with Sabretooth.

The X-Men and Brotherhood affiliation packs basically combine the Storm/Cyclops, Wolverine/Sabretooth, Beast/Mystique and Magneto/Toad boxes.

Yeah I think I am going to focus on these two packs. So many cool brotherhood members.

How many characters do I need to have a reasonable game?

For a casual game, you can use the 10 characters in the core set. Each character has a Threat level (cost, essentially) and games have a max. threat level of between 15 and 20. You just need enough characters to form 2 teams at whatever threat level you choose.

Core Set Heroes (Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man) and Core Set Villains (Red Skull, Baron Zemo, Crossbones, Ultron, Doctor Octopus) each total 17.

X-Men affiliation pack totals 14, Brotherhood affiliation pack totals 15.

If you like Brotherhood you could give Juggernaut a try. He's a very fun piece to have on the board.

If you have the original core box, Hulk would fit in with the Avengers from that box.

Daredevil is not affiliated, but he's a leader for the Defenders affiliation (which includes core set Spidey, and Hulk, and Wolverine) and he comes in a box with Bullseye who would fit in with the villains from the core set.

I was wondering about Hulk and Immortal Hulk. I was a huge fan of the Immortal Hulk run.

Is one more recommended than the other? Is he fun in the game? I worry about the hulk in games because sometimes he feels very watered down like in the Marvel Card game.

I'm a casual player, but I like Hulk. Hits hard and has a big bag of hot points. Also has a mechanic that means he rolls more dice on his attacks the more damaged he is.

I've never used Immortal Hulk. Awesome sculpt, though.

Both Hulks are excellent on the table.

Original Hulk is broadly considered to be one of the best 6 threats in the game. He's mobile, can displace enemies, and hits hard.

Immortal Hulk is a 7 threat. For that extra threat you're getting a survival mechanic that means that the opponent needs a plan to take him down, or needs to be able to control/ignore him (this is also true of the other Hulk, but more so with Immortal).

Would swapping out Spiderman from the core box from the Immortal Hulk work well? He is not avengers is thing going to matter? Someone said with X-men alot of their mechanics require everyone to kinda be an X-man.

Yeah, that should be fine - admittedly original Hulk is a better Avenger because he's affiliated, but not so much that I'd say not to do it.

In a standard game you bring 10 characters to the table, then select a squad of the correct threat after crisis selection.

If 51% (or more) of your squad is affiliated, then everyone gets to use the Leader's leadership ability, so splashing a few non-affiliated characters is standard practice.

Some Team Tactics cards require the targets to be in the actual affiliation though, which is why some affiliations prefer to splash less. First Class is a pretty key X Men card that has that requirement, so X Men tend to splash less.

If you pick up one of the Hulks you can always print/ check out the other Hulk's card on Jarvis Protocol and play with that one on different night, that's what we do in my group. If we have a model of a particular character then we'll also try out their other cards if they have the same character name. I.e Wolverine and Old Man Logan are fair game, but we wouldn't use the starter set Spiderman as Miles Morales etc
