Summary

  • Chris Hemsworth’s role in Furiosa as Dementus opened doors for more villainous roles and further collaboration with director George Miller.
  • Director George Miller is eager to work with Hemsworth again, which could put him in line to direct Thor 5.
  • Hemsworth’s potential return for Thor could bring the character back on track in the MCU.

Chris Hemsworth’s appearance as Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has allowed the actor to spread his wings into a more villainous role than fans are used to seeing him play. However, it seems that after many years, the role has also put him on the radar of director George Miller. The iconic filmmaker was swayed towards casting Hemsworth in the role after the pair met up several years before Furiosa finally came to fruition, and it seems he now cannot wait to work with the actor again – potentially putting him in line to take the helm of Marvel Studios’ Thor 5.

Miller has recently been promoting Furiosa ahead of its upcoming release, and while speaking to ComicBook.com, the director was asked about whether he would consider taking the helm of the next, and potentially final, outing for the God of Thunder. Miller, in his response, seemed very open to taking on the movie if it meant working with Hemsworth again. He said:

"I would work with Chris on anything. I really would. He's a wonderful actor. He's got the full range of all the skills. I mean, you've got to be athletic, physically. But, you also gotta be athletic emotionally and intellectually to take on these very, ultimately fairly complex, any role really. So, I was very lucky with all my cast and particularly in the way that Anya and Chris matched each other. Particularly towards the end of the month."

George Miller Could Correct the Course of Thor in the MCU

Hemsworth has become known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but 2023’s Thor: Love and Thunder became another low point for the Thor saga. While the character has been an integral part of the Avengers team since 2012, his first two solo movies are not among the highest rated Marvel projects. That all changed with Thor: Ragnarok, the Taika Waititi-directed film that almost became a buddy-movie between Hemsworth’s Thor, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie.

When Waititi returned to direct Love and Thunder, it seemed that there was no way the formula could fail. However, despite the movie doing reasonably well at the box office, the reviews were harsh, and Hemsworth himself recently acknowledged that he became too “wacky” in the latest installment. This is something that Miller taking the helm could remedy and could give Thor a new lease of life as he comes towards the end of his MCU journey. The project, if it did happen, would also give Miller his chance to finally step into the superhero arena after the cancelation of his Justice League: Mortal movie 15 years ago.

Chris Hemsworth engineered a meeting with George Miller that would end up leading to his eventual casting in Furiosa.

Miller’s Mad Max movies have been delivering a strong performance, with Furiosa looking set to outdo even the critically acclaimed Fury Road. Bringing Thor back to this kind of action-driven epic could be exactly what is needed to help put the MCU back on track after a couple of rough years.

In the meantime, Furiosa is ready to rev up its engines and bring the latest entry in the Mad Max franchise to cinemas on May 24.
