Reviewing ‘Awful Auntie’: A Perfect Pick for Kids!

If you’re seeking a fantastic stage production to enjoy with your kids, look no further than Birmingham Stage Company’s adaptation of David Walliams’ crazy adventure, “Awful Auntie,” touring across the UK this year. We caught it at Richmond Theatre, and it’s also heading to cities like Glasgow, Woking, and Liverpool. If you can’t make it to the Richmond London shows, be sure to catch it when it returns to Wimbledon in November.

My daughter is a huge fan of David Walliams’ books, having read many of them. She was particularly excited about “Awful Auntie,” a story she hadn’t yet read.

The plot revolves around Stella, a girl whose parents are murdered by her owl-obsessed awful auntie, who is determined to locate the deeds to Stella’s house before she murders her too. It’s as crazy as it sounds, but incredibly funny. Children will adore the show’s silliness, fart sounds, engaging storyline, and clever puppetry.

We were all impressed by the set design, which featured intricate details and seamless scene changes. The show, which lasts 2 hours including a 20-minute interval, offers tickets starting at just £13 per person, a great value. Booster seats were available free of charge, along with David Walliams’ books for purchase. This show is recommended for kids aged 5 and up.

The theatre is a wonderful place to take children, especially when a beloved book is adapted for the stage. It allows kids to see the characters they’ve imagined and the words they’ve read come to life. We had a great view from the dress circle, and I always recommend checking the website SeatPlan before booking tickets to ensure a good view from your chosen seats.

Overall, our experience watching “Awful Auntie” was delightful and memorable. It’s a must-see for families, especially those familiar with David Walliams’ imaginative stories. The combination of humor, suspense, and impressive stagecraft makes this production a standout in children’s theatre.
