Sharp increase in number of members prompts Scout group's volunteer appeal

A Scout group is looking for more volunteers following a sharp rise in its number of members.

Brill Scout Group has seen an increase of more than 30 per cent since January 2023, leading to a need for more volunteers to accommodate children moving from Cubs and those on the waiting list.

In January 2022, the group comprised 76 children and young people, but as of January 31 the number has risen to 94.

Brill Scout Group, on the Oxfordshire border, offers a range of activities including abseiling, camping and science.

Liz Johnson, lead volunteer for the group, said: "The children and young people in the group will have the opportunity to try different activities, have fun, learn new things, make new friends and learn skills.

"They will learn about leadership and teamwork, problem solving and independence, social skills and self-confidence."

A recent survey revealed 88 per cent of Scouts said they had tried activities they had not done before they joined.

At a recent event, chief scout Bear Grylls said: "Volunteers provide amazing activities for young people, they inspire them and they teach them skills for life and I’m proud of everything they achieve."

Ms Johnson added: "It’s a marvellous opportunity to share some of your skills, hobbies, experience and knowledge you have with the scouts in the group."
