Seeking Advice: Safe & Affordable Living for 26F Asian American in Greencastle, PA

Moving to PA

Hello Everyone! I posted this in the u/centralpa subreddit, but I thought I'd also post here in case anyone has any tips.

I recently received a job offer in Greencastle, PA, and I'm excited about the opportunity! However, I'm facing a bit of a dilemma when it comes to finding a safe and suitable place to live as a 26F Asian American.

My budget for rent is between $1.2k to $1.5k per month. I'm looking for recommendations on neighborhoods or areas that are not only affordable but also safe for someone in my situation.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

In Greencastle, you probably aren't going to find much. I work there, its a fairly small town and I can't think of any apartments in town.

I'd suggest looking in Chambersburg, where I live. Its only a couple miles north of Greencastle on I-81, and seems to have a bunch of places for rent

Hagerstown MD is also a really nice town about the same distance to the South. I just visited there last month and it was a nice town with a lot of new development  it seemed.

Plus cheaper gas, less tax than PA

Edited

yea but living in MD and working in PA means paying income tax to two states

Never mind this is wrong

MD and PA are reciprocal tax states, they do not double charge income tax, you only pay the taxes in the state you live in.

AH my mistake then

OP, DM me. I live in Chambersburg. My apartment management company has over 500 properties they run between Chambersburg, Greencastle, and the general area. I'll give you their number to the office. They're building 2 buildings right in front of me currently that are in your price range and will be brand new, actually. I live on a quiet street, about 2 mins from downtown Chambersburg and about 5 mins from route 81, on the southern side of town, which means you'd be getting on the highway at the exit closest to Greencastle, which is about a 15 minute drive maybe? Maybe 20 mins total commute? But you'll see it's probably worth it because there is a lot more going on in Chambersburg as far as retail, restaurants, bars, and entertainment overall, and a lot more diversity as well. If you go with an apartment building (which there are many recently built here), you'll literally have everyone as neighbors: Haitians, South and Central Americans, Mexicans, white, and African-American. There's a lot of agriculture and a lot of manufacturing around here, so lots of diversity.

Sent you a PM, thank you for this information ! 😁

My in laws have lived in that area for decades and have never had a problem. I'm pretty sure they don't lock their door. My father in law is an immigrant and has never been treated differently for that.

Greencastle is small. If you can find a small home or get lucky that would be nice for you, chambersburg is not the nicest place but not terrible, try using a short term rental app to get started, you cam always stay longer and then find another place later, air b&b. A really good one is furnished finders.

I am a property manager. It is unlikely people can tell you "safe" in any guaranteed way. That isn't how locations and life works

My sister was mugged a long time ago in philadelphia. My car was broken into in Jersey city. Does that mean everyone should avoid them?

Anyway, you can find websites with apartments and housing simply by googling like this:

Apartments near greencastle PA

You will get a number of sites

You can search on things like prices and locations.

Not to be a wise guy but as a retired career truck driver, I avoid places like Philadelphia and Jersey City because I view them as not safe.

To think of all of the life experiences that can only be had in large cities that you missed out on due to cowardice

ROFLMAO If you say so, keyboard warrior.

Hey man, I'm brave enough to have had bad things happen to me in Philly and then go back, so yeah I feel perfectly comfortable talking shit here big guy

but also safe for someone in my situation.

lol.

The area is pretty safe. The diversity however? Not really. I’d recommend chambersburg or Hagerstown :)
