Benedict Cumberbatch Talks ‘Multiverse of Madness’ Chaos and Dr. Strange’s MCU Future
With Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlet Johansson no longer a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there is perhaps no one better positioned to lead the Avengers forward than Benedict Cumberbatch.
Cumberbatch has portrayed Dr. Steven Strange across six different MCU films, including two standalone Dr. Strange movies, and has been one of the driving characters in Marvel’s multiversal saga.
During a recent appearance on The Playlist’s Bingworthy podcast, Cumberbatch was asked about the tumultuous production of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Not only was the film made during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it also underwent several rewrites, and saw Scott Derrickson (who directed the first Doctor Strange movie) replaced by Sam Raimi.
“I was unaware of the articles,” Cumberbatch said of the production issues.
“You’re part of a big machine. But you’re just trying to solve the problems on a set like any other job. And, yeah, it’s a massive sand pit to play in with very big and expensive, breakable toys. But you can only really do that if you’re loose and free and just doing your work as an actor. So, I kind of knuckled down and did that.”
Marvel Is Willing To Listen
Despite the fact that the MCU is a “big machine,” as Cumberbatch puts it, the actor also lauded the studio for being willing to listen to its stars. One person, he notes, can have a huge impact.
“I take my hat off to anybody who’s using the resources to try and make something better and just improve and improve and improve right up to the end,” he said. “And I mean, the most famous stories after the premiere. I think of the first ‘Avengers,’ Downey Jr. suggested the Shawarma scene. And then it was put in for the final cut that then got distributed. I mean, that’s fun to think you can still do that.”
What’s Next For Dr. Strange?
While Doctor Strange has been positioned to play a central role in the events of Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars, according to Cumberbatch, the actor knows as little of his character’s future as fans do.
“We will see. We will find out,” Cumberbatch said. “I’m not sure where he’s been and what he’s been up to and who with. But yeah, I know as little as you.”
Hopefully, we will hear more about Doctor Strange’s future soon.
