Summary

  • John Krasinski's new movie IF releases exclusively in theaters on May 17, 2024, promising a heartwarming story for families.
  • The film's voice cast, including Ryan Reynolds and Steve Carell, adds to the anticipation for IF among audiences and fans of Krasinski's work.
  • IF is set to stream on Paramount+ after its theatrical run, following the studio's typical release schedule within 45 days of its initial release.

John Krasinski's new movie has arrived, and there are different options for where to watch IF. The former The Office star found himself as one of Hollywood's most promising new directors in 2018 after A Quiet Place became a hit franchise starter. Six years and one sequel later, John Krasinski's A Quiet Place follow-up is very different from an alien invasion horror/action movie. 2024 brings the release of IF, a film about Bea (Cailey Fleming) and Cal (Ryan Reynolds), two people who embark on a journey to reunite imaginary friends with their former kids.

Thanks to the talent assembled for IF's voice cast and the promise of Krasinski's previous movies, the film's release in 2024 is highly anticipated. The movie, which uses CGI to bring imaginary friends to life in an otherwise live-action setting, is geared towards families and younger audiences with its PG rating. In addition to Reynolds and Fleming playing the lead roles, the cast includes Steve Carell and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as two of the main imaginary friends. The mixture of fun adventure and a heart-warming story should only increase interest to watch IF.

Paramount Pictures is the studio distributing IF, and the studio elected to give the film an exclusive theatrical release. IF releases in theaters on May 17, 2024, with hopes of it becoming one of the summer's box office hits. Originally, Paramount gave the movie a November 2023 release date, but the SAG-AFTRA strikes resulted in a delay to May 2024. Although IF is a big movie, it will not be available in any premium formats like IMAX or 3D for its theatrical release.

When Will IF Release On Streaming?

IF Will Stream On Paramount+

Paramount has yet to confirm when IF will be released on streaming. It is known that the film will stream on Paramount+ when the time comes. Thankfully, the studio has a solid track record for when a movie moves from theaters to streaming. Since 2023, Paramount's biggest movies typically move to streaming after 45 days of being exclusively in theaters, with the timing ranging from 46 to 53 days. This creates a projection for IF to be released on Paramount+ in July 2024 for its streaming debut.

The only exception to Paramount's streaming release habits is Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, which had a 197 day gap between theatrical and streaming releases

Those wanting to watch IF at home without a Parmaount+ subscription should be able to do so through the film's digital release. Paramount has not confirmed when this will happen, but the studio's track record makes it easy to predict. The average wait between theatrical and digital releases for Paramount's biggest movies is 45 days, but that shrinks to 36 days after Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning's 90-day gap outlier is removed. That means there should be an option to buy or rent IF in June 2024 if the projection holds. It should unless IF becomes a massive hit.
