St Marys 2-14 Cortown 1-10

St Marys made it 2 wins in 3 days, with a 7 point victory over Cortown in Donore on Tuesday night.

The home side started stronger and dominated the early exchanges, keeping the away side scoreless, while chipping in with early points from Eoin Kelleher, Nicky Gogan and Liam O’Brien from a placed ball. Marys were then awarded a penalty for a foul on Kelleher, and he duly stepped up and put the ball in the roof of the net. Further points from Cathal Sheridan, Gogan and O’Brien were then followed by a second goal and another point from Kelleher, getting on the end of a fine team move to the delight of the home supporters. Cortown had began to find their feet, and over the remainder of the half reeled off 5 points to leave the half time score 2-6 to 0-5 to the home side.

The second half seen the sides exchange blow for blow, as the away side became more comfortable in possession, but some resolute defending from the home side and in particular the excellent Ronan Everard at corner back limited Cortown to shots from distance. The away side then got in for a goal and point to leave a goal separating the sides. Both sides used their bench, with Cortown bringing on Davy Rispin and St Marys ringing the changes, in particular bringing Andy Everard on for his first appearance since early 2022, following an injury lay-off and a stint in Australia. This steadied the ship a little more, and Marys finished stronger, with points from John Spain, Cormac Victory, Jack Lynch, Gogan and the score of the night from Adam Craven to leave seven between the teams at full time. Both teams will be happy for this very competitive and well contested run out of a fine summers evening. Marys made 11 changes from Sundays win against Boardsmill, with a great blend of youth and experience on show over both games, using 30 players in total.
