Hongkong Post criticized for Cheung Chau Bun Festival stamp mix-up

Hongkong Post has been criticized over an incorrect stamp design celebrating the Cheung Chau Bun Festival after people pointed out it showed people performing the dragon dance instead of the traditional unicorn dance.

Yung Chi-ming, chairman of the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, said the dragon dance is never performed in Cheung Chau. Instead, he noted that people performed the unicorn dance or the pixiu dance, with dragons only featured on flags occasionally.

He told a radio program Monday morning that the Hongkong Post had previously shown him the design of the new stamps before their launch, but he was too busy preparing for the Bun Festival, and the faulty design had slipped his eye.

When asked whether he would request the postal department to withdraw or redesign the stamp, Yung said he had not planned to do so and would respect the department’s handling of the matter, whatever it may be.
