Rohit Sethi said amidst the economic prosperity brought by international students, challenges loomed large. Developed nations such as Canada, Australia and the UK had implemented measures to regulate student intake, raising concerns about the impact on the education export market. He warned that restrictions on international student flow could jeopardise local educational institutions and hinder the growth of small businesses.
With policy uncertainties casting a shadow over international student enrollment, prospective students were now exploring alternative destinations., he added. European countries such as Ireland, Germany, Italy and France were emerging as attractive options, offering affordable tuition fee and favourable pathways to work and settle permanently.
He said in the UK, universities were grappling with declining international enrollments amid policy uncertainties. Proposed changes to graduate visa regulations could deter prospective students, leading to a significant reduction in international post-graduate enrollments. Sethi underscored the importance of creating a supportive environment to retain the competitiveness of UK universities in the global education market.
To address misconceptions and raise awareness of the economic contributions of international students, Sethi advocated for educational initiatives targeting the general public. A recent survey revealed widespread ignorance regarding the economic impact of international students, highlighting the need for comprehensive awareness campaigns.
Sethi advised prospective students to research their options diligently and seek guidance from reputable overseas education consultants. He added that by fostering a welcoming environment for international students, countries could harness the full potential of international education and promote mutual benefit for students and host communities alike.
