The WNBA’s 13th team finally has a name ― the Golden State Valkyries.
For months, people have been speculating about the name of one of the league’s newest teams, even tweeting president Jess Smith. (Smith’s kids even tried to name the team. It’s been SERIOUS). On Monday, the Golden State X (Formerly Twitter) account teased a possible name-drop just hours ahead of announcing it Tuesday morning.
What did the team come up with? A light purple and black-themed video that starts with the phrase “Born from the bay, gilded in gold” as it flies through a city and eventually reveals 3 figures with wings and swords standing inside Chase Center ― Valkyries. The clip ends urging fans to head to Golden State’s new site for more info and a new logo based on the Bay Bridge.
