What lyrics are you obsessed with not because of their meaning, but because of her delivery?

Discussion

I'm obsessed with Fresh Out The Slammer simply because of this line:

to the one who says I'm the girl of his ~American~ dreams

The way she says 'American' scratches juuuust the right part of my brain. This isn't my favorite song on TTPD, but I find myself listening to it over and over again just so I can keep hearing this line!

What if he’s written mine on my UPPER thigh only in my mind?

The way she sings UPPER in the last chorus is too good

YESSS and the way she says “one slip &fallin back into the ~hedge~maze oh what a way to diieee” plus rhyming kiss with tryst gets me too! I literally love the whole chorus of Guilty as Sin so much.

u/franch avatar

yeah this whole chorus is so good, the delivery throughout ttpd1 is so flawless

I feel the same about that last chorus. Also, am I insane or does ‘Guilty as Sin’ sound sort of like Speak Now era? I feel like I haven’t seen anyone talking about that so I’m wondering if I’m just imagining it. It sounds very nostalgic to some of her older music to me.

Agree! It reminded me of “I Can See You.”

One of the greatest part of the whole album.

The final "screaming" in Black Dog. Barely a whisper. Goosebumps.

u/corgi_lifter16 avatar

And I hope it’s SHITTY

This is so satisfying for no good reason

More replies

If I were that bar I'd put up a sign with the lyric "and I hope it's shitty at the black dog" 🤍

THAT ONE FUCKS ME UP BECAUSE SHE'S SAYING OLD HABITS DIE SCREAMING- AND THEN ISNT SCREAMING, BECAUSE SHE CANT LET HIM GOOOO AUGHH

u/Proxyfloxacin avatar

Maybe her most vulnerable moment on TTPD? Or all discography for that matter. So good.

“My beloved ghost and me, sitting in a tree, d-y-i-n-g” from How Did It End?. I don’t know why, I just immediately loved that part of the song.

the entire bridge is spectacular but this haunted take on a childhood nursery rhyme definitely stood out to me on my first listen as well!

More replies

Omg the way she says "my beloved ghost and me" is unexplainable.

u/Jsofeh avatar

As a nurse, her using the term "death rattle" had me doing the Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme. That alone sold me on the bridge

u/OGingerSnap avatar

“Silenced as the soul was leaving”

Such a vivid image of death if you’ve witnessed it. She put a lot of grief into that bridge.

More replies

I repeat the song more than once just to hear the bridge again

There are days that line just won’t leave my mind.

OBSESSED with the way she says “I’ll tell you something right now” in But Daddy I Love Him. It scratches an itch in my brain

u/goldenfluff23 avatar

I also love the way she says “bitching” in “bitching and moaning”!

Omg at work they played the clean version and I don’t know what it said but it didn’t say bitching and moaning and me and my coworkers lost it

I think I heard that and it might say griping and moaning 😂

Her anger in “I don’t cater to all these VIPERS dressed in empath’s clothing”… chef’s kiss

u/LilyMarie90 avatar

She pronounces vipers like the word itself is poisonous, it's brilliant. That entire part is a 10/10, both delivery and meaning

she is SO fed up, I love it

u/Psychological_Pen491 avatar

the way she also says "telling him to floor it through the fences" 😫✋✋

Yes! This has such "let me remind you" energy.

This song is so theatrical and dramatic I LOVE it. If you see me screaming this at the top of my lungs while driving, no you didn’t.

For me its the AND I'LL TELL YOU SOMETHIN BOUT MY GOOD NAME

For me it’s “but I howl like a wolf at the moon” from the prophecy. In my head 24/7 at this point

& the oohs that resemble howling towards the end

More replies

agreed! this is for sure my favorite line in the prophecy

u/EstPC1313 avatar

I’m a huge fan of the line preceding that: “Feeling like the very last drops of an ink pan”, love how its delivery is very pointed, like drops of ink.

Yessss her delivery is incredible the whole way through

In WAOLOM, she says, "If you wanted me dead, you should've JUST SAIIEDD" And it makes me think of early Tori Amos. Gets me every time.

Same song, similar feel

"And we can ALL just laugh until i CRYYY"

the most satisfying voice crack I've ever heard

u/Mommio24 avatar

Same! The way she sings that song really reminds me of her, that and Cassandra give me Tori Amos vibes.

"put narcotics into all of my songs" shivers

It is so Tori. Channeling “Crucify”

I LOVE this part. She sounds crazy which is perfect for the song lol

Yes!! And “is it a wonder I broke let’s hear one more joooo o o oke” the way she sings joke in that stilted voice

The “mine” in “it’s mine alone to disgrace”. It has just enough of that country twang callback, and it’s so satisfying to listen to!

IT’S MAIYYN

u/Badass-bitch13 avatar

That song gives me such 90s female country pop vibes - like Sheryl Crow/Shania Twain vibes.

in the last chorus of but daddy i love him the way she laughs a little when saying “oh my god, you should see your faces” >>>>

she sounds so happy and cheeky in this one, I just love it

Also the music drop before the last NO I’M NOT

Yes, the second time she hits the teeeeeeth with the twinge of twang 👌

“I’m just mad as hell cause I loved this place”

The line is actually great but the mixture of sadness and anger in her voice is what makes it. It’s my favorite delivery of any of her songs ever

really makes you realize you lose so much more than just a person during a breakup, but all of your favorite places you experienced with them as well!

u/cozyghost avatar

This line makes me tear up every timeee
